Motivational interviewing technical process and moderated relational process with underage young adult heavy drinkers.

Abstract: This study tested technical and relational processes hypothesized to explain the therapeutic benefit of an efficacious brief motivational interview (BMI). A randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy of a BMI to an attention-matched control (i.e., relaxation training [REL]) for reducing heavy alcohol consumption and associated negative consequences. Participants were underage, past-month heavy drinkers recruited from community settings (N = 167; ages 17-20; 62% female; 59% White). Data were collected on… Show more

“…The lack of relationship between steps and counselor adherence to the relational principles of Collaboration and Empathy is consistent with past findings (Magill et al, 2019; Morgenstern et al, 2017). Similar to findings from the meta-analysis conducted by Magill and colleagues (2018), scores on the MI relational components had a restricted range from average to high, most likely because MI counselors receive close supervision in a research study.…”

“…In more detail, MI elicits personal statements for change, called change talk, and deals with reasons against change, i.e., sustain talk, within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion (Miller and Rollnick, 2013). Research on the associations between MI and behavioral outcomes showed that a higher proportion of change talk over sustain talk is associated with reduced risk-seeking behavior (Magill et al, 2018; Magill et al, 2019).…”

“…Moreover, most evidence-based interventions have measures of fidelity and implementation standards that are capable of documenting whether or not the presumed competencies are translated to practice. For example, the counseling approach Motivational Interviewing has several measures of provider competence that are performancebased (i.e., verbal behavior measured in actual or simulated counseling sessions) and that provide valid and reliable estimates of skill, thresholds for competence, and research supporting the validity of these measures in predicting client outcomes (Magill et al, 2019;Martino et al, 2016;Moyers et al, 2016). Similarly, there are well-established measures of suicide risk assessment and prevention competencies that are capable of measuring the transfer of skill from training programs, include multiinformant measures of skill, and are related to core outcomes, such as the ability to make accurate suicide risk judgments (Cramer et al, 2019).…”
