Motivational interviewing and self-determination theory in a web-based computer tailored physical activity intervention: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Objective: This study explores whether a web-based physical activity (PA) intervention grounded in self-determination theory (SDT) and motivational interviewing (MI) is more effective and better appreciated than a traditional web-based PA intervention. Design: A randomized controlled trial was conducted, comparing (1) I Move; a web-based PA intervention based on SDT and MI, (2) Active Plus; a traditional web-based PA intervention and (3) a waiting list control condition. Main outcome measures: Weekly minutes o… Show more

“…Formal mediation analyses were conducted in 12 studies [62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73]. A further two studies reported having had the intention to conduct mediation analyses which were subsequently not carried out due to lack of variability in outcomes or non-significant treatment effects for maintenance outcomes [74,75].…”

“…Three of the 12 studies [65,70,71] conducting formal mediation tests reported adequate power to detect mediator outcomes, one of which was specifically powered to detect mediation [65]. Six studies had published study protocols but did not report the intention to conduct formal mediation analyses [63,[67][68][69]72,73]. Three studies measured mediators prior to the physical activity outcome [63,65,72], and all 12 of the studies examined changes in physical activity and mediator outcomes from baseline, or controlled for baseline values.…”

“…Self-determination theory [20,2527] is a straightforward and useful framework that clinicians can use to structure and direct this task. It is a well-documented theory of human motivation frequently applied to the healthcare setting.…”

“…This moment of transition also enables clinicians to refocus on the major task of their interaction with the person with diabetes: supporting and encouraging the person's motivation for behaviour change. Self-determination theory [20,[25][26][27] is a straightforward and useful framework that clinicians can use to structure and direct this task. It is a well-documented theory of human motivation frequently applied to the healthcare setting.…”

“…This framework proposes interventions that specifically address individual therapists' motivation through the lens of the therapist-parent-child relationship within a supportive organisational context. In practice, interventions grounded in motivational interviewing and selfdetermination theory [69] that support therapists autonomous motivation may be beneficial [26,[69][70][71][72]. Individual goal identification and ownership, developing "just right" challenges for increasing assessment use within the practice setting are needed.…”
