Motivational Deficits and Negative Symptoms in Schizophrenia: Concepts and Assessments

Abstract: Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in motivational disturbances in schizophrenia . This is largely driven by the recognition that these disturbances are central to the "experiential" subdomain of negative symptoms and are particularly important determinants of functional disability. Research into the causes and treatment of experiential negative symptoms is therefore a high priority. This chapter reviews findings from experimental psychopathology and affective science relevant to understanding the… Show more

“…Oxytocin may impact some of these deficits but not others, in which case investigating specific symptoms could prove useful. This is consistent with growing support in recent years for dividing negative symptoms into two distinct elements: 1) an experiential dimension comprised of avolition, anhedonia, and asociality; and, 2) an expressivity dimension comprised of restricted affect and poverty of speech (Reddy et al, 2015). …”

“…There were no significant associations between DD and other substances, symptoms, or antipsychotic medication dosages. Given the conceptual link between reward processing and negative symptoms (Reddy, Horan, et al, 2016), it is somewhat puzzling that alterations in DD, particularly on the experiential task, did not significantly correlate with higher clinically rated negative symptoms. Although some studies have found that neuroscience-based reward and decision making tasks are associated with negative symptoms (e.g., Barch, Treadway, & Schoen, 2014; Gold et al, 2013; Strauss et al, 2014) a number of studies by our group and others failed to detect such relationships (see Green, Horan, Barch, & Gold, 2015; Horan et al, 2015).…”

“…Given our results, one potentially promising pathway for developing negative symptom treatments is to enhance DLPFC-mediated cognitive control function in rewarding situations in order to improve functioning outcomes in schizophrenia. As recently reviewed by Reddy et al (2015), there are few effective negative symptom treatments and/or interventions in the field. Only a few preliminary studies exist on this topic (reviewed in Elis, Caponigro, & Kring, 2013).…”
