Aim: The present study was aimed to determine the normal reference values of M-mode echocardiographic measurements in healthy Indian Spitz dogs and evaluate the influence of gender and body weight on these measurements. Materials and Methods: M-mode echocardiography was performed in twenty-four clinically healthy conscious Indian Spitz dogs, aged 3-5 years and weighing 7-18 kg. Measurements were made from the right parasternal long axis left ventricular outflow tract view of the heart. The parameters recorded were: Left ventricular internal dimension, interventricular septal thickness and left ventricular posterior wall thickness during diastole and systole, left atrial diameter, aortic root diameter, left ventricular systolic functional parameters, and indices and mitral valve parameters. Results: M-mode echocardiographic measurements in healthy Indian Spitz dogs were standardized. Gender had no influence on echocardiographic measurements except mitral valve excursion amplitude and time interval between onset and end of mitral valve closure, which were significantly (p<0.05) higher in females than males. Left ventricular internal dimension at end-diastole, left ventricular internal dimension at end-systole, left ventricular posterior wall dimension at end-systole, end-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume, stroke volume, cardiac output, left ventricular ejection time, and mitral valve excursion amplitude correlated significantly (p<0.05) with body weight in Indian Spitz dogs. Conclusion: Data obtained in the present study can be used as breed-specific reference values for cardiac disease diagnosis as well as for future studies in Indian Spitz dogs.

Echocardiographic measurements of the dog’s heart are known to be breed-specific. The establishment of normal echocardiographic measurements for each breed of dog increases the accuracy of echocardiographic examination. The purpose of this preliminary study was to determine the value of normal echocardiographic measurements of local dogs from Malaysia. A total of 20 clinically healthy client-owned pet dogs were recruited, in accordance to the pre-determined inclusion criteria of the study. Two dimensional and M-mode echocardiograms image of both long and short axis of the left ventricle were obtained in accordance to recommendation by the American Society of Echocardiography. From this study, the reference echocardiographic measurements of local dogs in Malaysia were established. The measurements of intra-cardiac dimensions, wall thickness, and contractility varied from the Indonesian mongrel dogs, as well as the general population of dogs that have the same average body weight. There is no association between echocardiographic measurements with gender and bodyweight of local dogs in Malaysia.

Ketamine is anesthesia that commonly used in the rabbit’s surgery as animal model often combined with transquilizer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the rabbit’s cardiac performance after administration of ketamine anesthesia combined with transquilizer. A total of 24 rabbits of New Zealand White strain were divided into four treatment groups, namely ketamine 40 mg/kg BW, combination of ketamine 10 mg/ kg BW and xylazin 3 mg/kg BW, ketamine 10 mg/kg BW and medetomidin 0.125 mg/kg BW and ketamine 10 mg/kg BW and acepromazin 1 mg/kg BW group. Evaluation were performed at 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes after administration of anesthesia. Evaluation of cardiac performance using echocardiography on heart rate, stroke volume, ejection fraction, fractional shortening and cardiac output. The results showed that the heart rate in all treatment groups decreased along with observation time, except the ketamine group increased after 45 minutes. The stroke volume, cardiac output and fractional shortening in all treatment groups was stable, and the value was not significantly different among time observation (P> 0.05). The ejection fraction of the ketamine combined with transquilizer showed had the same pattern, decreasing at the 30 minutes observation followed by increasing at 45 and 60 minutes observation, while the ketamine group increased at 45 minutes but decreased again at minute 60. The lowest ejection fraction score was seen in the ketamine group. The research suggest that administration of ketamine with combined transquilizer medetomidin showed the most stable cardiac performance during observation.
