Motilin Stimulates Gastric Acid Secretion in Coordination with Ghrelin in Suncus murinus

Abstract: Motilin and ghrelin constitute a peptide family, and these hormones are important for the regulation of gastrointestinal motility. In this study, we examined the effect of motilin and ghrelin on gastric acid secretion in anesthetized suncus (house musk shrew, Suncus murinus), a ghrelin- and motilin-producing mammal. We first established a gastric lumen-perfusion system in the suncus and confirmed that intravenous (i.v.) administration of histamine (1 mg/kg body weight) stimulated acid secretion. Motilin (0.1, … Show more

“… 2 For example, regulation of gastric acid secretion involves vagal afferent nerves that innervate the gastric mesenchyme ( Figure 1 ). 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 Myenteric neurons stimulate not only parietal cells to directly secrete acid, but also G cells, D cells, and ECL cells to indirectly influence gastric acid secretion. Enteric neurons and glial cells, which eventually form the 2 concentric rings of our enteric nervous system (ENS), also play a role in other key digestive functions such as gut motility and muscular contractility, which aid in the stomach’s mechanical digestion.…”

“…GHSR is a ghrelin receptor. Ghrelin can stimulate gut motility and gastric acid secretion (Asakawa et al 2001;Goswami et al 2015). c-Aminobutyric acid and glutamate dominate hypothalamic synaptic transmission and administration of their receptor agonists into hypothalamic nuclei stimulates feeding (Delgado 2013).…”
