Permanent repository link AbstractThe aims of the current study were to examine the effect of fathers' and mothers' pre and postnatal mental health on mother-infant and father-infant interactions. Mental health was broadly defined to include anxiety, depression and PTSD. A community sample of 44 mothers and 40 fathers from 45 families completed questionnaire measures of mental health in late pregnancy and three months postpartum. Mother-infant and father-infant interactions were observed and videoed three months postpartum and analysed using the CARE-index.Results showed that prenatal mental health, in particular anxiety, was associated with parentinfant interactions to a greater extent than postnatal mental health. Fathers' prenatal symptoms were associated with higher paternal unresponsiveness and infant passivity whilst fathers' postnatal symptoms were associated with higher levels of infant difficulty in the father-baby interaction. The results also indicated that mothers and fathers interaction with their babies were similar, both on average and within the couples, with 34% being inept or at risk. These findings highlight the need for early detection and prevention of both mental health and parent-infant relationship problems in fathers as well as mothers. However, further prospective and longitudinal studies are needed to understand the influences of parental mental health on the parent-infant interactions further. Also it should be noted that the mental health scores were low in this well-educated, middle-class relatively low risk community sample of two-parent families, and that future studies therefore would benefit from focusing on more vulnerable groups of parents.

Objective: this study aimed to identify priority needs and concerns expressed by fathers in the performance of their role in three stages of the life cycle: adolescence, productive age, and mature age. Methodology: this is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach, conducted with fourteen fathers residing in a municipality in the extreme south of Brazil. The data were collected between May and August 2011 by means of the in-depth interview. Through the technique of written discourse analysis and the array built upon Bronfenbrenner's bioecological theory, we obtained three categories: fathers' needs/concerns, generated in their relationship with the world of work; needs/concerns that emerged from the relationship of care with the children; and fathers' concerns about the future of the children. Conclusions: we identified that the concern with the future of the children was pointed out by fathers of all age groups investigated. Key words: Nursing; Paternity; Parent-Child Relationship. RESUMENObjetivo: identificar las necesidades y preocupaciones prioritarias, manifestadas por los padres en el desempeño de su función, en tres etapas del ciclo de vida: adolescencia, edad productiva y edad madura. Metodología: estudio exploratorio con abordaje cualitativo, desarrollado con catorce padres residentes en un municipio en el extremo sur de Brasil. Los datos fueran colectados entre mayo y agosto de 2011, a través de entrevistas en profundidad. A través de la técnica de análisis textual y discursiva e de la matriz construida basada en la teoria bioecologica de Bronfenbrenner, fueran construidas tres categorías: Necesidades/ preocupaciones de lo padre, generado en suya relación con el mundo de lo trabajo; Necesidades/preocupaciones que emergen de la relación de cuidado con hijos e preocupaciones de los padres con lo futuro de los hijos. ObjectiveIntroduction of solid foods before the recommended age of 4–6 months is a common practice in the USA, and appears to be especially prevalent among infants who are enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Currently, little is known about how fathers influence early infant feeding decisions, outside the decision to breast- or formula-feed. The purpose of the current study was to explore how fathers perceive the role they play in feeding and caring for their infants.DesignParticipants were twenty-one male caregivers, who were fathers or partners of the mothers of WIC income-eligible infants residing in two rural East Tennessee counties. In-depth, audio-taped telephone interviews were completed. Interviews were transcribed, coded and analysed according to standard grounded theory procedures to identify emergent concepts. These concepts were explored and linked together to become themes.ResultsThree themes emerged: (i) fathers’ roles; (ii) fathers’ perceptions; and (iii) control. Concepts within the theme of fathers’ roles included physical and emotional support for both mother and infant, validation of maternal decisions, and financial support. In the present study, fathers’ perceptions were primarily shaped by their own experiences, advice from those with experience, and information sought by the fathers. The theme of control appears to be the linkage between the fathers’ attempts to modify infant behaviour and infants’ response.ConclusionsA final conceptual model was created to explain the interrelated nature of the themes and may be helpful to those who work with fathers and/or families of new infants.
