Mother-Infant Interactions in Rats Lacking CCKA Receptors.

Abstract: Mediation of mother-infant interactions by the brain-gut peptide cholecystokinin (CCK) was examined by observing behavior of Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats, which lack functional CCKA receptors because of a genetic abnormality. OLETF (n = 10) and control (Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka [LETO] n = 10) dams interacted with 1 pup of each line on Postpartum Days 6-9. OLETF pups received more body and anogenital licking and emitted substantially more ultrasonic vocalizations than LETO pups. OLETF dams … Show more

“…Weller and colleagues (Lavi-Avnon et al 2004;Blumberg et al 2005) have examined aspects of the development of ingestive behaviours in OLETF rats. OLETF pups consumed more sweetened milk than LETO control pups in an independent ingestion test in which pups lick milk off a filter paper on the floor of the test chamber.…”

“…Recently, a few studies in our lab demonstrated differential body weight already from birth (Schroeder, Zagoory-Sharon, Lavi-Avnon, & Weller, 2005; Schroeder, Zagoory-Sharon, Lavi-Avnon, Moran, & Weller, 2006); different independent ingestion patterns already on postnatal days (PND) 2-4 and 9-11 (Blumberg, Haba, Schroeder, Smith, & Weller, 2006), different patterns of infant distress reactivity (Hurwitz et al, 2006) and of maternal and nursing behavior (Lavi-Avnon, Malkesman, Hurwitz, & Weller, 2004;Schroeder et al, 2005) compared to the control strain, Long Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO).…”

“…In addition to these differences between the pups, there is disparity in the behavior of OLETF and LETO dams that may contribute to the difference in the rate of weight gain of the offspring. OLETF dams spend more time nursing (Schroeder et al, 2007a) and behave differently than LETO dams when interacting with one pup (Lavi-Avnon, Malkesman, Hurwitz, & Weller, 2004). …”
