“…The low hyperfine field of the component is almost unnoticed without the application of an external field; only at a high external field its value ͑ϳ1.4 T͒ is well defined in the fitting ͑note the estimated errors in Table I͒. According to the proportionality between this hyperfine field and the Fe magnetic moment, 29 the latter can be roughly estimated to be ϳ0.1 Bohr magnetons ͑ B ͒ per Fe atom, confirming the weak ferromagnetism of the sigma phase resulting from intinerant electrons. 30 Figure 9 presents the 80-K Mössbauer spectrum of the annealed FeCr47.7 sample which, as for the spectra of the as-prepared sample, has been fitted to a paramagnetic singlet and a hyperfine field distribution.…”

“…The areas of the doublets that comprise a Mössbauer spectrum are proportional to the relative number of atoms of the species represented by the doublet, i.e., the relative amount of Fe 2+ in the M1 and M2 sites or the proportion of Fe 2+ (or Fe 3+ ) relative to the total Fe content (e.g., Preston et al 1962;Bancroft et al 1967;Bancroft 1969). A quantitative determination of number of moles of Fe 2+ per site requires a correction for thickness (Rancourt et al 1993) and for the recoil-free fraction ( f ) for the M1 and M2 sites (work currently in progress).…”

“…A Co ~7 in Pd source of nominal strength 25 mCi was used with an argon-methane proportional counter as 3,-ray detector. Velocity calibration was carried out with high purity metallic iron foil using the data of Preston et al (1962). To minimize thickness effects all absorbers contained -3 mg irordcm 2, prepared as described above.…”
