Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) of the meridian zone of the subtropical mountainous rainforest of Argentina: update on the fauna and geographical distribution

Abstract: Abstract:We report here three new mosquito records in the Yungas ecoregion [Culex (Culex) dolosus, Culex (Micro culex) Pleuristriatus Series and Howardina sp.] and the expansion of the distributions of 17 species of the genera Anopheles, Culex, Aedes, Psorophora, and Toxorhynchites for Argentina. These findings broaden the total number of species recorded for northwestern Argentina to 174, from which number 57 species are distributed in the Tucumán province, 21 in the Catamarca, and 96 in the Salta. “…In this work, specimens were collected from artificial water sources such as flowing artesian wells, adding a new breeding site to those already described by other authors who mentioned swimming pools, cemetery vases and tires, and different types of outdoor containers with rainwater (Díaz-Nieto et al 2013; Rossi and Almirón 2004). Coinciding with Veggiani and Rossi (2017), Cx. apicinus larvae were also collected together with Cx.…”

“…Thus, several studies that integrated the existing information have been carried out by Mitchell & Darsie (1985), Campos & Maciá (1998) and Rossi (2015). Later Linares et al (2016), Veggiani Aybar & Rossi (2017, Stein et al (2018) andDantur Juri et al (2020), updated the list of species for different provinces of Argentina, including those of the NWA. Stein et al (2018) cited the presence of 246 mosquito species in Argentina, of which 125 are present in the NWA.…”
