Mosquito larvae control by photodynamic inactivation of their intestinal flora – a proof of principal study on Chaoborus sp.†

Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of photodynamic agents to combat mosquito larvae, the carriers of dangerous pathogens around the world. All photosensitizers tested were observed in the digestive tract of the larvae.

“…When the PSI curcumin is ingested by Ae. aegypti larvae, for example, it accumulates throughout the gut and permeates into the hemocoel, 39 but when the PSIs TPPS, TMPyP and mTHPC (porphyrin derivatives) are ingested by Chaoborus crystallinus larvae, they all remain confined to the larval gut 24 . Here, we observed that MB – which is similar in size to curcumin – accumulates in the gut, gastric caeca and hemocoel of both Ae.…”

“…The rapid photodegradation of PSIs is an ecological advantage for these broad‐spectrum insecticides. Due to their photoactivation mechanism, PSIs are toxic to small, translucent aquatic insects 20–26 . However, PSIs are non‐toxic to translucent zebrafish even after light irradiation 27 .…”

“…To test for biological function, i.e., photochemical defense, a photoinsecticidal assay utilizing Chaoboridae larvae (Chaoborus crystallinus) was performed according to Preuß and colleagues [39]. In brief, ten larvae were treated with a methanolic extract of C. sanguineus var.…”
