Abstract

The creation of this school of higher learning was dictated by the extreme need within the cadres for the most critical branch of industry, which was then embryonic --the machine-tool branch. Machine tools are those unique machines that can create others (automobiles, aircraft, agricultural and life-giving equipment, etc.), including machine tools themselves. That is why new technologies, machine-tool equipment, and thorough computerization are some of the chief national resources of the country --the technological medium.It is precisely the existence of a powerful technological medium in which any other machine can be produced that characterizes the technico-tecimological level of any government. We very frequently, and especially in the modern situation, compare the state of Russia with other countries, dwelling on her problems. In that ease, the United States, Germany, Japan, England, France, Sweden, and Switzerland can be mentioned as examples of well-being, having given little thought to the fact that the achievements of these countries are dictated primarily by the existence, in their ease, of a modern technological medium. Without any tightening, Russia can be placed on the same tier with other countries; this is suggested by our technical advances. Other questions are: how is the available technico-technological infrastrncture managed, and how is it reoriented toward those problems that are dictated by the market place, and, of course, the demands of society.It is possible to state that the preservation, development, and augmentation of technical-technological potential are the general line in societal evolution, and, above all, highly qualified workers are required. The Moscow State Technological University "Stankin" has systematically and purposefully prepared engineering and scientific employees for over 65 years. "Stankin" has acquired a reputation not only in Russia, but also beyond its borders, as a result of the highly qualified collective of the university, great achievements in the fields of scientific and engineering developments, a strong material base, thorough computerization of the teaching process, and the publishing of hundreds of monographs and textbooks, which serve not only as a source of knowledge for our students, apprentices, engineers, aspirants, and doctors, but which have also achieved popularity in foreign countries.We are proud of the names M. V. Keldysh, P. P. Lazarev, N. S. Acherkan, B. S. Balakshin, V. V. Dobrovol'skii, Yu. A. Geller, I. E. Gorodetskii, V. M. Meshcherin, B. I. Segal, and I. I. Semenchenko, and many currently employed leading scientists and teachers, and the honorary Russian workers of science and engineering, who have created scientific schools in "Stankin," and educated a large number of such high-level specialists as A.
