Mortality rates among prevalent hemodialysis patients in Beijing: a comparison with USRDS data

Abstract: The annual mortality for the Beijing MHD patients was lower than that for their USRDS counterparts, and this difference existed after baseline demographics were adjusted. This survival difference between the Beijing and the USRDS MHD cohorts could be attributed to differences in race or practice pattern. More studies are needed to validate our hypothesis.

“…However, a 35% reduction in HR was identified in patients with serum Ca level over 2.5 mmol/L at baseline. The mortality rate was 14.6%, similar to that (13.9%) reported by Cheng et al in 2013[8]. Ageing (≥50 yrs),diabetes and hypertension which were presented as primary causes of ESRD, all remained as strong predictors of mortality.…”

“…First of all, this is a retrospective observational study rather than a randomized controlled study. Secondly, as stated in a previous study [8], the Beijing hemodialysis dataset only referred to city but not national. Some primary causes of ESRD were uncertain.…”

“…The proportion of ICED levels 0-1, was 75% in this study, compared to that of the HEMO study, 35.1% [9]. The better survival rate may also be explained by the racial difference, all Asian in this study, compare to the racial diversity of the US, 54% patients being white, 38.3% black, and 3.7% Asian [16,17]. …”

“…Furthermore, in addition to having a high prevalence of traditional CVD risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension, dialysis patients also have a number of risk factors related to their kidney dysfunction. Some of these risk factors are angiosteosis, vascular stiffness, accumulation of circulating inflammatory mediators and autonomic dysfunction, which result in CVD becoming the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with CKD receiving dialysis, accounting for 40% [13] . Recent evidence also elucidated an increased incidence and accelerated progress of atherosclerosis in patients with CKD receiving dialysis compared with that of the conventional CVD [14] .…”
