Abstract: Although a regular moderate physical activity is commonly accepted as an important heath promoting factor, the role of professional sport training is still under debate. The presented mortality analysis, concerning the period of 1946-2000, was performed for three groups of people completely healthy in youth, but exhibiting different physical activity level in those days: all Polish athletes who participated in the Olympic Games (1689 males, 424 females), drama actors/actresses (2406/1938), and monks/ nuns (796… Show more

“…For instance, former Finnish elite athletes were more physically active during leisure time, smoked less, consumed less alcohol, and had a healthier diet than their referents. 35 Another important limitation arises from the absence of information on specific cause of death in 3 studies 15,16,19 (accounting for w14% of the total meta-analysis sample) and, especially, from the observed heterogeneity among studies for all-cause pooled SMR as well as for SMR due to cancer. A reason explaining such heterogeneity may be the large variability among studies in the sports phenotype of the cohorts, which included athletes participating in quite different sports specialties, that is, ranging from team sports with little aerobic component such as baseball to extreme endurance events such as Tour de France.…”

“…For all "joggers" or ambitious middle aged triathletes it is not enough. They have to train and suffer from arrhythmias, but they live longer [19][20][21]. The study by Marijon et al [22] reports positive effects professional endurance sport.…”

“…Die Bewertung und Interpretation dieser Anstiege der Biomarker nach Belastung ist derzeit uneinheitlich [20]. Langfristig haben Leistungssportler aus Ausdauersportarten jedoch eher eine bessere Lebensprognose als Sportler aus Kraft-und Schnelligkeitssportarten und insbesondere als inaktive Personen [4,16]. …”
