Mortality of Stroke and Its Subtypes in China: Results from a Nationwide Population-Based Survey

Abstract: Background: In China, stroke is the leading cause of death and contributes to a heavy disease burden. However, a nationwide population-based survey of the mortality of stroke and its subtypes is lacking for this country. Methods: Data derived from the National Epidemiological Survey of Stroke in China, which was a multistage, stratified clustering sampling-designed, cross-sectional survey, were analyzed. Mortality rate analyses were performed for 476,156 participants ≥20 years old from September 1, 2012 to Aug… Show more

“…In the past 30 years, mortality associated with aSAH has shown a downward trend in China [9], probably due to improved diagnostic techniques, early aneurysm repair, and intensive medical management. However, data from the CNSR showed that mortality was still high at 28 days, 3, 6, and 12 months, that is, 16.9, 21.2, 23.6, and 24.6%, respectively, for patients with aSAH [8].…”

“…Most of the studies used to determine risk factors to date are limited by either being single-center series, including a predominance of patients treated by open micro-neurosurgery, or using a selected patient group randomized to clinical trials [7]. Furthermore, advances in diagnostic and treatment strategies for aSAH have substantially improved the outcomes of patients over the last decade(s); however, previous studies on the epidemiology of stroke in China showed that the mortality and disability after aSAH were still relatively high, leading to a huge burden on individuals, families, and society [8, 9]. Nevertheless, limited studies provide data on clinical characteristics, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of DCI after aSAH in China.…”

“…It is characterized by sudden loss of blood circulation to an area of the brain, resulting in a corresponding loss of neurologic function (Donnan et al, 2008). It's the incidence of ischemic stroke is increasing with an aging population (Chen et al, 2017c). The global burden of ischemic strokes is nearly fourfold more common than hemorrhagic strokes (Kalaria et al, 2016).…”

“…In China, approximately 7 million patients had a stroke and >70% of them had an ischemic stroke. The recurrence rate of ischemic stroke is approximately 8%, and the disability rate is up to 17%, which is the main cause of neurofunctional disability (Chen et al, 2017). Ischemic stroke is associated with a high rate of incidence, recurrence, disability and mortality, which not only affect patients' self-care ability, but also may result in heavy burdens on their family and society (Chen et al, 2017;Sherzai & Elkind, 2015).…”

Therefore, an early detection of ischemic stroke and its prevention have important practical significance, which may ultimately lead to better health outcomes and reduce the financial burden inherent to diseases associated with a long-term disability.…”
