“…Recently Hauptmann and colleagues have found that mortality rate from leukemia increased significantly not just with number of years of activity, in this case embalming, but also with increasing peak formaldehyde exposure (Dreyfuss, 2010;Hauptmann et al, 2009).…”

“…Considering the possible association with leukemia the epidemiological evidence has become stronger and IARC has concluded that there is sufficient evidence for leukaemia, particularly myeloid leukaemia (Baan et al, 2009;Hauptmann et al, 2009;IARC, 2006). Moreover, in 2010 Schwilk and colleagues performed an up-dated meta-analyses focusing in higher exposure groups and myeloid leukemia and included two large recent studies and conclude that formaldehyde exposure is associated with increased risks of leukemia, particularly myeloide leukemia and highlight the importance of focusing on high-exposure groups and myeloid leukemia when evaluating the human carcinogenicity of formaldehyde (Schwilk et al, 2010).…”

“…Por outro lado, a toxicidade do formaldeído causa irritação nos olhos e mucosas, podendo prejudicar o ensino em anatomia (Karlsen et al 1994, Hammer et al 2011. Ademais a exposição contínua a esse produto foi relatada como um possível desencadeador de tumores (Hauptmann et al 2009, Viegas et al 2010.…”

“…Although not everyone chooses to embalm the dead before disposition of the body, the use of formaldehyde embalming fluid is extensive in the American funeral industry and is a known cause of cancer among funeral industry workers (e.g., Hauptmann et al 2009). Further, when the human body is drained of blood, to replace that blood with formaldehyde embalming fluid, both fluids become part of the wastewater stream of the funeral home, entering the municipal sewer system (Chiappelli and Chiappelli 2008;Doughty 2014).…”
