“…Gastric cancer was detected in 4 out of 77 achlorhydric patients with pernicious anemia in the Minnesota survey [36], meaning a 21.9-fold increase in comparison to normal population after conversion in per 100,000 annual incidence. In 309 cases of pernicious anemia, a 10-year survey resulted in a 5-percent incidence of gastric cancer, significantly higher than the expected frequency [66]; however, in 50% of cases, the cancer was localized in the antrum, despite the prevalence of gastric atrophy in the fundal area. In 293 cases of pernicious anemia, inci dence of gastric cancer at autopsy reached 12%, a 3-fold increase in com parison to the control series.…”

“…The absolute frequency is estimated between 5 and 12% [49,66], This figure is considered by most authors to be higher than in simple atrophic gastritis, but this is not a definite statement [103,107]. On the other hand, a systematic exploration will detect pernicious anemia with an increased frequency in patients with gastric cancer.…”

“…The Journal of Immunology, 2012, 188: 190-197. A utoimmune gastritis (AIG) is a typical organ-specific autoimmune disease. Patients with AIG often have complications, such as gastric cancer, gastric carcinoid tumors, or pernicious anemia accompanied by achlorhydria (1)(2)(3). The histological findings of AIG are characterized by a chronic mononuclear cell infiltration affecting only or predominantly the corpus mucosa and causing loss of parietal and chief cells from the gastric gland (1).…”
