Mortality, Causes of Death and Associated Factors Relate to a Large HIV Population-Based Cohort

Abstract: IntroductionAntiretroviral therapy has led to a decrease in HIV-related mortality and to the emergence of non-AIDS defining diseases as competing causes of death. This study estimates the HIV mortality rate and their risk factors with regard to different causes in a large city from January 2001 to June 2013.Materials and MethodsWe followed-up 3137 newly diagnosed HIV non-AIDS cases. Causes of death were classified as HIV-related, non-HIV-related and external. We examined the effect of risk factors on survival … Show more

“…Similar to other studies injection drug use was significant predictor of mortality in Georgia [ 30 32 ]. The difference was statistically significant with all other transmission categories and this is the result of highest rate of late presentation among drug users.…”

“… 18 According to a previous large HIV population-based cohort study, the mortality rate was higher in patients with CD4 counts of 200 cells/mm 3 or less, and a CD4 count of less than 200 is one of the factors associated with AIDS-related causes of death. 19 However, in our study, the mortality rate and AIDS-related causes of death between CD4 < 200 cells/mm 3 and CD4 ≥ 200 cells/mm 3 groups showed no significant differences. This difference might be attributed to the fact that the previous study did not find a specific cause of death in 18.7% of patients.…”

“…Despite advances in availability and tolerability of treatment, mortality remains high among HIV- positive PWID when compared with other key populations of PLHIV, in low-, middle-, and high-income settings [69,10*,11,12,13*,14,15,16*,1723]. For example, across the 16 European and North American cohorts in the Antiretroviral Therapy Cohort Collaboration, which comprise 32 703 HIV-positive adults who started ART between 2000 and 2009, all- cause mortality among people with a history of injection drug use (IDU) was more than twice that of individuals with no history of IDU [10*].…”
