Mortality and health-related quality of life in prevalent dialysis patients: Comparison between 12-items and 36-items short-form health survey

Abstract: BackgroundTo assess health- related quality of life (HRQOL) with SF-12 and SF-36 and compare their abilities to predict mortality in chronic dialysis patients, after adjusting for traditional risk factors.MethodsThe Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) with the embedded SF-12 was applied in 301 dialysis patients cross-sectionally. Physical and mental component summary (PCS-36, MCS-36, PCS-12, and MCS-12) scores were calculated. Clinical and demographic data were collected. Mortality (followed for up to 4.5 years) … Show more

“…Healthrelated quality of life (QOL) as evaluated by validated self-reported questionnaires is also markedly diminished in this population (9). Identification of reversible factors that are associated with poor physical function and QOL in MHD patients may provide targets for therapeutic interventions.…”

“…HRQOL represents the impact of the disease or its treatment on the subjective feelings of patients about their physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, social and functional wellbeing [17]. HRQOL deteriorates as kidney function worsens [18] and is an independent risk factor for mortality in dialysis patients [19]. The Kidney Disease Quality of Life (KDQOL) questionnaire [20] has been validated for use as a disease-specific measure of quality of life.…”

“…The SF-12 is a shortened version derived from the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) to represent the Physical and Mental Component Summary in the general US population [15]. The SF-12 has fewer items, takes less time to complete, and was shown to give similar predictions of mortality as the SF-36 in CKD-D patients [20]. The SF-12 Vitality Scale (item 10) was used to ascertain fatigue, with a Likert score range of 1-6, and higher scores representing more fatigue (online suppl.…”
