Mortality and Cancer Experience of Quebec Aluminum Reduction Plant Workers, Part 2: Mortality of Three Cohorts Hired on or Before January 1, 1951

Abstract: Mortality from cancer of the lung and bladder and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are related to exposure in Söderberg smelters. The cause of increased stomach cancer mortality is unclear. Excess mortality from some other diseases may be explained by factors other than coal tar pitch volatiles exposure.

“…Studies of PAH exposure in humans have included cooked meat at high temperatures (Anderson et al, 2005;Sinha et al, 2005;Li et al, 2007;De Stefani et al, 2009), an aluminum smelter cohort (Friesen et al, 2007;Gibbs et al, 2007), consumption of fried chicken (BaP ∼5.4 mg/kg) and smoked dried beef (BaP ∼5.5 mg/kg), smokers inhaling daily ∼0.26 mg of BaP per pack of 20 cigarettes (Piccardo et al, 2010), and charcoal-broiled steak containing BaP levels of ∼9.0 mg/kg (http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp.asp? id5122&tid525).…”

“…2 Although not significantly in excess, the SMRs were higher in the 2000 to 2004 follow-up period for accidents/poisonings/violence, cancer of the pancreas, ill-defined cancers, non-Hodgkin lymphomas and cancers of lymphoid tissues, chronic rheumatic heart disease, and diseases of arteries, arterioles, and capillaries. When both follow-up periods were combined, none of these increases revealed new causes with significant excess mortality over the whole period 1950 to 2004.…”

“…The metal sector includes installations for steel founding and aluminum production, two industrial activities classified by Fig. 1 Geographic distribution of cases, controls, industrial installations, and centroids in the four health areas and wind roses for the city of Gijon, for the period 1971-2000 (annual, January, andJuly) the IARC as implying a carcinogenic risk to humans (IARC 2012), and reported by some occupational and/or environmental studies as being associated with lung cancer (Benedetti et al 2001;Bosetti et al 2007;Gibbs et al 2007;Pershagen and Simonato 1990;Rodriguez et al 2000;Spinelli et al 2006). Nevertheless, our results-with few exceptions-failed to show any consistent excess risk around such industrial activities.…”
