Morse Things

Abstract: Applying a thing-centered, material speculation approach we designed the Morse Things to acknowledge and inquire into the gap between things and us. The Morse Things are sets of ceramic bowls and cups networked together to independently communicate through Morse code in an Internet of Things (IoT). We deployed the Morse Things in the households of six interaction design practitioners and researchers for six weeks. Following the deployment, we conducted a workshop to discuss the role of the Morse Things and ult… Show more

“…The hybrid OOO and Animism approach which we discuss below is quite unique, but with there is a sympathetic, rich, and varied literature covering related 'post anthropocentric' perspectives which also seek to understand and practice elements of design in related own ways. These are incredibly diverse, including media-focused and sociology-driven inquiry 65 , theory-agnostic projects centred on creative exploration 66 , and discussions bookended by quite general labels such as Posthumanism 67 and New Materialism 68 . A full discussion of these is somewhat beyond our the scope of what we can cover in detail, but what the gamut of related work seems to highlight is space for convergence; there is an opportunity to cohere the so-far disparate approaches into a more manageable whole.…”

“…While it would be impractical to offer a complete exposition of this Post Anthropocentric landscape, the following aims to provide an introduction to the range of perspectives. Postphenomenology describes technology as a mediator of human experience and which is tied into a reciprocal relationship; human shaping technology and technology shaping human (Wakkary et al, 2017). New Materialism (Van der Tuin & Dolphijn, 2012) resonates with Hyperobjects (Morton, 2013), and shifts focus from technology per-se, and instead develops strategies for considering non-human perspectives in terms of new political arguments relating to, among other things, environmental sustainability.…”

“…These are all forms of dissemination that we greatly encourage and represents how this transformative knowledge is spreading among international communities of design practitioners. Additionally, the contribution of the Manifesto is also acknowledged within academia (Fritsch, Shklovski, and Douglas-Jones 2018;Wakkary et al 2017).…”
