The drainage pattern and the morphology of the piedmont zone of the Himalayas are clear indicators of the active orogenic belt of most recent origin formed by the collision of Indian and Eurasian plate. The foothills of the Himalayas in West Bengal are zones of active tectonics drained by the rivers belonging to the Brahmaputra system. The present study is conducted for the left bank tributaries and sub-tributaries of Tista which bear the imprint of active tectonics of the region as they lie in the zone of Himalayan Frontal Fault, the most active thrust belt of Himalayas. Data and subsequent field experiences which showed that the region is constantly acted upon by recent diastrophism. Various tectonic indices were calculated to evaluate the evidence of tectonism. This include hypsometric integral (HI), fractal dimension (FD), basin asymmetry factor (AF), basin shape index (Bs), stream-length gradient (SL), mountain front sinuosity (Smf) and valley-floor width to valley height ratio (Vf). The results of these indices are used to prepare an index of active tectonics with three classes which is represented in a map. Then the field evidences of deformed landscape are matched with the areas showing high tectonic index values.

Fluvial processes, one of the main actors in the development of the geomorphologic structure, are reflected most saliently by valleys in topographic surfaces. Analyses focusing on valley morphometry that present concrete and accurate data in terms of both existing geometries and formation and development processes play a significant part in explaining geomorphologic properties especially in fluvial morphogenetic regions. Unfavorable aspects such as the insufficiency of existing analysis methods in generating real values and impossibility of conducting process-based analysis have created barriers to achieve the expected success in comprehending valley morphometry. Therefore, in order to eliminate this shortcoming, this study established a methodology by identifying the problems to enlighten which parameters should be placed in what parts of the equation by citing how the parameters should be measured in order to ensure the generation of desired data on both analog and digital data bases. This methodological approach, expressed more clearly and comprehensibly with the help of illustrations and mathematical formulas, was finalized by correlating it with the elements and parameters with counterparts in the concrete field data. As a result, while it was possible to examine concrete quantities in valleys related to length, area and volume based on amount and ratio without limitations on area and section; it was also possible to present a methodological framework that allows process analysis in terms of the operations of the fluvial process and developmental course of the geo-morphological structure.

Rivers are basic natural resources supporting ecosystems and human societies, and the health of rivers is crucial to the Earth's sustainable development. Under the profound influence of climate change and human activities, great changes have recently occurred in the circulation and development of rivers, as well as the ways in which they are utilized. In this context, achieving an effective balance between river protection and human development is necessary. In this paper, the essential role of rivers is discussed from three aspects: the formation and evolution of rivers, the shaping of biodiversity, and the cultivation of human civilization. The paper analyzes the challenges brought to the sustainable development of rivers by climate change, human activities, and increased water demand, and proposes four dimensions of future research: scientifically balancing the relationship between river development and protection, improving the adaptability of river development and utilization in the context of climate change, improving the integrity and intelligence level of river management, and building a more fair and sustainable comprehensive river management model.
