The availability of effective weed management tools against waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus) is crucial to maintain profitable production of snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Preemergence herbicides enable the crop to gain a size advantage over the weed, but the few preemergence herbicides registered in snap bean have poor control of waterhemp. Sulfentrazone, a protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) -inhibiting herbicide, provides significant control of waterhemp and other problematic weeds. However, crop tolerance to the herbicide is poorly known. To quantify snap bean tolerance to sulfentrazone and investigate the underlying tolerance mechanism(s), a genome-wide association mapping study was conducted using field-collected data on a snap bean diversity panel. Response to a preemergence application of sulfentrazone was measured using plant population density and shoot biomass variables. High levels of crop tolerance were found in several entries including Bush Romano 71, Navarro, and Flamata. Snap bean tolerance to sulfentrazone is associated with multiple genomic regions, indicating the trait is likely a non-target site resistance (NTSR). Seed size is partially responsible for the tolerance, thus the genetic factors conditioning sulfentrazone tolerance are likely a combination of those driven indirectly by seed size/weight and those acting directly on the metabolism of the herbicide or ameliorating its damage. In this study, several cytochrome P450 and ABC transporter genes were localized in associated genomic regions. Alleles conditioning snap bean tolerance to sulfentrazone identified in the diversity panel shed light on herbicide metabolism and could be used in snap bean improvement.

Brazil stands out in the world for being one of the largest producers and consumers of common beans and cowpeas. However, the cultivation of this agricultural species is exposed to competition with weeds for water, light and nutrients. One of the management methods for weed control is the use of pre-emergent herbicides. Although pre-emergence herbicides are beneficial in controlling weeds, it is important to know the dynamics of these products in the soil, especially their residual effect. Two experiments were carried out to assess the tolerance of bean genotypes to the pre-emergent herbicide S-metolachlor in two Brazilian soils. Bean genotypes have differential tolerance to S-metolachlor when grown in soils with different characteristics. The Vigna spp. were the most affected by S-metolachlor, especially the red Adzuki. Plant growth was more sensitive when grown in sandy soil for most species. Total chlorophyll content was not affected for most genotypes in the two soils evaluated. The differential tolerance of the genotypes in both soils confirms the potential of S-metolachlor to cause damage to the bean crop, especially in sandy soil. The S-metolachlor was efficient in controlling sourgrass and selective to the bean cultivars (Pérola and Talismã) in both soils evaluated. Alexandergrass behaved differently in the soils evaluated, showing tolerance to the application of S-metolachlor when in Oxisol and sensitivity in Ultisol.

Interferência e nível de dano econômico de papuã em feijoeiro em função da densidade de plantas

O estudo da densidade de semeadura do feijoeiro e do nível de dano econômico (NDE) ocasionado pelo papuã (Urochloa plantaginea) são ferramentas importantes para a adoção do manejo integrado dessa planta daninha e, assim, produzir um alimento com maior qualidade e menor resíduo de agrotóxico. Diante disso, objetivou-se com o trabalho avaliar a interferência e o nível de dano econômico do papuã em competição com o feijoeiro, estimados em função de densidades de semeadura da cultura e da planta daninha. Os tratamentos foram compostos por densidades do feijoeiro, cultivar IPR Uirapuru (140.000, 180.000, 220.000 e 260.000 plantas ha-1) e do papuã que variaram de 0 até o máximo de 104 plantas m-2. O experimento foi implantado em um Latossolo Vermelho Aluminoférrico típico na área experimental da Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul, campus Erechim/RS, em 31/10/2016. Para descrever a relação entre a perda de produtividade de grãos do feijoeiro e as variáveis explicativas; densidade de plantas (DP), cobertura do solo (CS), área foliar (AF) e massa seca da parte aérea (MS), usou-se o modelo da hipérbole retangular. As variáveis CS e DP podem ser usadas em substituição a AF e a MS para estimar as perdas de produtividades de grãos do foeijoeiro. A densidade de 260.000 plantas ha-1 do feijoeiro apresentou maior competitividade com o papuã e os maiores valores de NDEs, justificando a adoção de medidas de controle da planta daninha em densidades mais elevadas.
