Morphometry of the Retrobulbar Human Optic Nerve: Comparison between Conventional Sonography and Ultrafast Magnetic Resonance Sequences

Abstract: The precision of magnetic resonance imaging exceeds that of ultrasonographic methods for determining optic nerve and nerve sheath diameters. HASTE sequences appear particularly appropriate for investigating the retrobulbar optic nerve complex and may be useful in future studies quantifying axonal loss within the optic nerve.

“…Additionally, MR imaging provides higher soft-tissue contrast and free section orientation capabilities compared with CT and appears to be more accurate in assessing the ON than sonography. 16 Despite these advantages, the ON has been technically difficult to image because of its small size: It is 0.4 -0.6 cm in diameter within the orbit.…”

“…In patients with papilledema, the subarachnoid space dilates, the optic nerve is compressed, and the nerve sheath is widened [117]. The precision of MRI seems to be higher than that of ultrasound [118]. Rigorous studies have been done to determine the ability of MRI to detect increased ICP using ONSD.…”

“…After establishing optic nerve diameters in normal subjects, 23 we recorded data of OND in patients with POAG and correlated these measurements with the aforementioned parameters. For this purpose, we used MRI, SLP, SLT, OCT, and SAP to examine a cohort of normal subjects and patients with POAG at different stages of progression.…”
