Aims and Objectives:Sexual dimorphism refers to the variations in tooth size and shape between the sexes. The consistency of these variations is valuable in the identification of the sex of an individual in times of mass disaster when whole body parts get destroyed or are unavailable. There exist differences in the expression of these variables across races and regions. This study aims to tabulate and identify the variations in tooth measurements using standarized reference points in an attempt to establish parameters of sexual dimorphism.Materials and Methods:100 individuals (50 of each sex) in the age group 19-23 years were assessed for standard morphometric parameters of the maxillary central incisor, canine, premolar and molar. Odontometric measurements of established parameters were recorded from impression casts of the maxillary jaws. The mesiodistal width (MDW), the bucco-ligual width (BLW), the crown length (CL) and the cervical angle (CA) were charted among the teeth. The consistency of the variations was statistically analyzed and a logistic regression table was prepared to identify the sex of the individual from the tooth measurements.Results and Conclusions:The BLW, MDW and CL reflected significant variations among all the teeth to be effective in establishing sexual dimorphism. CA as a parameter was inadequate across all the teeth. The permanent maxillary canine was the most important tooth to be reflective of the gender and statistically significant to be utilized for gender determination.

Mandibular incisor crowding is the most frequently occurring characteristic of malocclusion, which can be resolved by removing single lower incisor. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the pre- and post-treatment outcomes through model and cephalometric analysis of the patients subjected to single lower incisor extraction. In this retrospective study pre- and post-treatment lateral cephalograms and models of 23 patients who underwent fixed orthodontic treatment with single incisor extraction on lower arch were evaluated. The study subjects were classified into two groups based on extraction pattern (Group I: Upper premolar and lower single incisor extraction; Group II: Upper non extraction and lower single incisor extraction). Both cephalometric and model analysis were carried out using Ilexis FACAD AB-2014 Version3.8.0.0 (Ilexis AB, Sweden). Wilcoxon Signed Rank test was used to compare the pre and post-treatment quantitative parameters. A significant decrease was observed in the maxillary intermolar width, mandibular intercanine width, mandibular intermolar width, mandibular arch length and anterior Bolton’s ratio. Group I subjects revealed a greater decrease in maxillary intermolar width compared to Group II, whereas a greater decrease in mandibular intercanine width, mandibular intermolar width and anterior Bolton’s ratio was documented in Group II subjects compared to Group I. Cephalometric analysis revealed significant proclination and extrusion effect of lower incisors along with protrusive tendency of the lower lip. The findings of the present study provide an additional option of extracting single lower incisor, in borderline or Class II camouflage treatment cases.

Introduction: The size and shape of the tooth are important sources of information for anthropology, forensic odontology, and clinical dentistry. Different populations, and even individuals within the same population, may have variations in the odontometric characteristics of their teeth, which limits the applicability of the data across groups. Aim: To establish the normal odontometric data of primary teeth and examine the sexual dimorphism and its usefulness as a tool to identify the sex among young children. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 150 children aged 3–5 years. The parents of the selected children were informed about the procedure protocol of the study and their written consent was obtained. The negative replica of the maxillary and mandibular teeth was obtained and dental casts were prepared. The mesiodistal, buccolingual, and crown height dimensions of each tooth were measured with a digital Vernier caliper. Two independent examiners measured each tooth’s dimensions three times, and the mean was analyzed. Results and Discussion: There was no significant difference between the teeth in the right and left quadrants. Males had larger odontometric dimensions than females. The sex of children based on odontometrics of primary teeth crowns could be determined with an accuracy of 98%, 72%, and 86% using mesiodistal, buccolingual, and crown height dimensions, respectively. Conclusions: There was a clear sexual dimorphism of the primary teeth. The odontometrics can be used as a low-cost and alternative tool for sex identification among children.
