The most recent, mainly explosive eruptions of Ciomadul, the youngest volcano in the Carpatho-Pannonian Region, have been constrained by detailed field volcanological studies, major element pumice glass geochemistry, luminescence and radiocarbon dating, and a critical evaluation of available geochronological data. These investigations were complemented by the first tephrostratigraphic studies of the lacustrine infill of Ciomadul's twin craters (St. Ana and Mohoş) that received tephra deposition during the last eruptions of the volcano. Our analysis shows that significant explosive activity, collectively called EPPA (Early Phreatomagmatic and Plinian Activity), started at Ciomadul in or around the present- and organic matter from lacustrine sediments recovered from both craters, the last of these phreatomagmatic eruptions-that draped the landscape toward the east and southeast of the volcano-occurred at ~29.6 ka BP, some 2,000 years later than the previously suggested last eruption of Ciomadul.

The dating of young volcanic eruptions is often difficult with respect to the time range between the sensitivities of radiocarbon and the routine K-Ar methods (ca. 50 ka and 1 Ma, respectively); problems can also arise due to the absence of suitable K-bearing minerals (e.g. leucite, sanidine) or charcoal fragments. However, by combining zircon U-Th and (UTh)/He dating this critical time-window can be covered. Because of the low closure temperature of the zircon (U-Th)/He system (~150-180 °C), and the fact that zircon is a widespread accessory mineral in most of the volcanic eruption products, this method is suitable for dating the age of eruptions directly. Furthermore, over the last decade,the advantages of the method have been supported by its expansion and application by international researchers when dating young (< 1 Ma) eruption events. In this Hungarian review paper a summary is presented of the theoretical principles, basic methodology and past developments of the (U-Th)/He geochronology; it also shows the applicability of the method for dating young (< 1 Ma) volcanic eruptions.For the purpose of this study eruption products were selected from the Carpathian-Pannonian Region and they are related to the youngest volcanic activity (Ciomadul, South Harghita) known in the area. These are the andesitic dome of Dealul Mare and the pyroclastic deposit close to the village of Bixad; these features have eruption ages of 843 ± 27 kyrs and 32.6 ± 1.0 kyrs, respectively. The selected samples are good for demonstrating each step of the method from the measured raw data to the corrected age, and also for illustrating its adequacy for deriving reliable eruption ages for young volcanic products.Keywords: (U-Th)/He geochronology, disequilibrium dating, zircon, Carpathian-Pannonian Region, Quaternary Összefoglalás A fiatal vulkánkitörések kormeghatározása sokszor igen nagy nehézségbe ütközik a konvencionálisan használt módszerek időbeli korlátai (pl.: radiokarbon -~50 ezer év a felső korhatár; K-Ar -~1 millió év a rutinmérések alsó korhatára), vagy a méréshez szükséges megfelelő ásványok (pl. leucit, szanidin), valamint szenesedett növénymarad -ványok hiányában. Az U-Th mérésekkel kiegészített cirkon (U-Th)/He geokronológia többek között erre a kritikus időintervallumra kínál megoldási lehetőséget. Alacsony záródási hőmérséklete (~150-180 °C) miatt képes a kitörés idő -pontjáról direkt információt adni, továbbá nagy előnye az is, hogy a cirkon egy igen széleskörűen elterjedt akcesz szórikus ásvány a legtöbb vulkáni kitörési termékben. Mindezekből kifolyólag az elmúlt évtized alatt a nemzetközi kutatások során egyre elterjedtebbé vált a módszer alkalmazása a fiatal (<1 millió év) kitörések datálására is, azonban a hazai kutatásokban csak kis mértékben jelent meg ugyanez a tendencia. We present major element glass data and correlations of the 'Roxolany Tephra' -a so far geochemically unconstrained volcanic ash layer previously described in last glacial (MIS2) loess deposits of the Roxolany loess-palaeosol complex in the SW Ukraine. This exceptionally well preserved, 2-3 cm thick tephra layer is characterised by a rhyolitic glass composition that is comparable to that of proximal tephra units from Ciomadul volcano in the East Carpathians, central Romania. The chemistry particularly matches that of the final LSPA pyroclastic fall unit of St. Ana crater that is radiocarbon dated in the proximal Mohoş coring site (MOH-2) at 29.6±0.62 cal ka BP. The age of the tephra correlative is in agreement with the newest radiocarbon and IR-OSL age constraints from overlying palaeosols and tephraembedding loess of the Roxolany sequence, respectively, which place the tephra between ca. 33 and 24 cal ka BP, and thus confirm the long-debated chronostratigraphy of this important 2 environmental archive. The occurrence of a distal Ciomadul tephra ca. 350 km east of its source indicates a great potential of further tephra and cryptotephra findings from this volcanic complex in the south-eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea region.
