Morphometric variability in populations of Palaemonetes spp. (Crustacea, Decapoda, Palaemonidae) from the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon Basin

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Morphometric variability among shrimp populations of the genus Palaemonetes Heller, 1869 from seven lakes (Huanayo and Urcococha, in Peru; Amanã, Mamirauá, Camaleão, Cristalino e Iruçanga, in Brasil) in the Amazon Basin, presumably belonging to Palaemonetes carteri Gordon, 1935 and Palaemonetes ivonicus Holthuis, 1950, were studied. The morphometric studies were carried out from the ratios obtained from the morphometric characters. Multivariated analysis (Principal Components Analysis-PCA, Discrimina… Show more

“…In similar studies, the strong discriminating power of morphometric variables has been recognized (Waldman et al, 1997;Murta, 2000;Garcia-Davila et al, 2005;Ferrito et al, 2007;Anastasiadou and Leonardos, 2008;Anastasiadou et al, 2009). This has shown that the morphometric characters used in this study have an application in taxonomy and may be used as indices to measure morphometric variation among Mugil groups.…”

“…This explained the efficiency of discriminator power of morphometric characters used. Indeed, a strong discriminating power of the morphometric variables was found for comparison between populations (Waldman et al, 1997;Murta, 2000;García-Dávila et al, 2005;Ferrito et al, 2007;Anastasiadou and Leonardos, 2008;Anastasiadou et al, 2009). The Mahanalobis distance indicated that the morphometric differences between four groups were all significant (p < 0.001).…”

“…Principal (Murta, 2000;Garcia-Davila et al, 2005;Ferrito et al, 2007;Anastasiadou and Leonardos, 2008;Anastasiadou et al, 2009). The differences found among the shape of shells could also be explained as the outcome of the phenotypic plasticity of the populations subjected to different environmental conditions (Marquez et al, 2010).…”
