“…Genetic distance measures may be useful for the determination of species boundaries and, in accordance with the hypothesis of cryptic species in small mammals (Bradley and Baker ; Baker and Bradley ), levels of mitochondrial differentiation as those found in this study have been used as criteria for the description of new forms of Peromyscus (Bradley et al. , ).…”

“…Previous taxonomic identifications for some lineages correspond to P. mexicanus sensu stricto (C), P mexicanus (lineages A, B, D, F, M, N), P. gymnotis (D, M), P. guatemalensis sensu stricto (H), P. guatemalensis (I, J, L) and P. grandis sensu stricto (K, O). been used as criteria for the description of new forms of Peromyscus (Bradley et al , 2014.…”

“…Although several recent studies have focused on developing phylogenies for Peromyscus (sensu lato and sensu stricto) and its affiliated genera, for a variety of reasons, none have been able to offer unambiguous taxonomic recommendations. First, Peromyscus is a large genus with new species still being described (Bradley et al 2004a(Bradley et al , 2014; complete taxonomic sampling is often difficult. Second, because several character systems have been studied and analyzed, it presents a challenge to resolve discrepancies when there are conflicting data.…”

“…Because rodents may have distributions that are restricted to small areas and microhabitats, and because sampling is far from complete, we may be missing species with restricted distributions. Evidence that this is more than speculation is the description of a new species of deer mouse Peromyscus carletoni Bradley et al, 2014, or the pocket gopher Thomomys nayarensis Mathis et al, 2013b from the highlands of Nayarit, in areas very close to SPMRB, and associated to vegetation types that also are present in the basin. The apparent overrepresentation of bats and carnivores might just be the result of the relatively low numbers of recorded rodents, which lowers the percentage of the latter while increasing that of the former.…”
