Black Bengal goat (BBG) is a native breed of Bangladesh and its ability in reducing the establishment of H. contortus infection through cellular and immune responses was unexplored. In vitro larval motility in response to PBMC, in vivo larval infectivity assay, differential blood cell counts, histopathology, cytokine and transcription expression have been investigated in BBG kids following H. contortus L3. In vitro motility experiment revealed that L3 exposed to PBMC from primed kids had significantly (P < 0.05) reduced speed and straight-line distance compared to L3 exposed to PBMC from naive kids. Kids with L3 exposed to PBMC in primed and naive kids, reduced H. contortus egg shed. Upon 10,000 L3 challenge, WBC count was higher in primed kids compared to naive and 35% of TC were neutrophils. Lymph nodes were increased in weight (P < 0.05) in primed kids except 1st day (D0). IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IL-33, MCP1, CXCL1, TLR2 and GAL14 were expressed both naive and primed kids. Significant expression of IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IL-33, MCP1 and CXCL1 at D3, D5 and D7, suggesting early TH2 differentiation in primed kids. These results suggest that BBG can much resist H. contortus infectivity. Role of transcriptome differences in other resistant breeds should be investigated.

Objectives: The objective of this work was to estimate the diversity of gastrointestinal (GI) para¬site species, their prevalence, and risk factors in Black Bengal goats (BBGs) of Natore, Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: Fecal samples from randomly selected 260 BBGs were processed through Stoll’s ova counting method, floatation, and simple sedimentation method. Microscopy-based identification of parasitic eggs, cysts, or oocysts was made. A semi-structured question¬naire-based data on host and management practices were collected from the owner. Data analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Results: The overall prevalence of GI parasites in BBGs was 65.4%, with an individual prevalence of 8.5% for Fasciola gigantica, 21.5% for Paramphistomum spp., 20% for Haemonchus spp., 34.2% for Strongyloides spp., 8.5% for Trichuris spp., and 9.2% for Eimeria spp. No significant effect of host age, gender, body condition, animal rearing system, or housing floor type was observed on parasitism. Animals of young age, female, poorly body-conditioned, living in a free-range system, and housed on a muddy floor had a relatively higher susceptibility to infection. Deworming had a significant impact on reducing the frequency of caprine GI parasitism. Conclusions: Despite the significant effect of anthelmintic, the elevated prevalence of GI parasites in BBGs suggests a critical need for developing effective strategies to prevent caprine parasitoses.

In Bangladesh, a comprehensive study was conducted over one year to compare the reproductive and productive performance of Black Bengal, Jamunapari, and crossbred goats. The study involved a sample size of 226 goats and provided insightful information on the distinctive capabilities of each type of goat breeds. Most of the doe were 21–30 months of age, and their weight was 21–30 kg. The feed supply for the doe was concentrated green grass, whereas the kids got supplementary feed like rice bran. Among the reproductive traits, age at puberty, age of first kidding, and age of the first conception were significantly (P<0.001) higher in Jamunapari goats, whereas aerial kidding intervals were found in 263.77 ± 54.26 days in crossbreeds. Postpartum heat periods were highest at 68.50 ± 5.53 days in Jamunapari goats at 1st and 2nd parity, though at 3rd parity, 22.96 ± 26.66 days were uppermost in Black Bengal. There was no significant effect of parity on lactation length or milk production. Though Jamunapari goats show the highest lactation length at 1st and 2nd parity, at 3rd parity, 2.56 ± 2.89 kg was the largest in Black Bengals. The mortality of kids was high in the second parity in Black Bengal and crossbreeds, whereas in Jamunapari, it was higher in the first and second parities. The mortality rate of kids under 20 days was high, which gradually decreased with the advancement of age. Different periparturient and postpartum diseases, like abortion, dystocia, retained placenta, etc., decreased the reproductive performance of goats. The Black Bengal goat exhibited superior productive and reproductive performance to Jamunapari and crossbred goats. The study's findings suggest that, in the southwestern region of Bangladesh, prioritizing Black Bengal goats for breeding programs could potentially enhance both productive and reproductive traits compared to Jamunapari and crossbred goats.
