Morphometric evaluation of the early stages of healing at cortical and marrow compartments at titanium implants: an experimental study in the dog

Abstract: Bone apposition to an implant surface followed a significantly different pattern in the compact and the marrow compartments around the implants. While in the compact compartments, bone apposition had to develop through the BMUs following resorption, it developed in very dense layers through an early apposition in the marrow compartments.

“…During the same interval, new bone increased 14-18%, so that the density of total bone increased between 1 and 2 months of healing both at the treated and untreated implants. The increased density of total mineralized bone around implant in the marrow compartment was also shown in an experiment in dogs previously presented [1,34].…”

“…In another experiment in dogs, the early phases of bone formation in the cortical and marrow compartments were studied in submerged implants [34]. In the cortical compartment, new bone density was 0.6%, 2.5%, 16% and 23.3% after 5, 10, 20, and 30 days, respectively.…”

“…So far, partial bonding was assumed to occur randomly on both cortical and trabecular bone components. Although we do not investigate preferential osseointegration in a specific component (as in eg, 33,34 ), it is nevertheless of interest to consider each bone component separately. Consequently, in this section, the ROA was systematically and randomly varied over the cortical or the trabecular bone interface, while the complementary bone section underwent only frictional interaction without any bonding.…”
