Abstract: Introduction:Foramen ovale is an important foramen in the middle cranial fossa. Foramen ovale is situated in the greater wing of sphenoid bone, posterior to the foramen rotandum. Through the foramen ovale the mandibular nerve, accessory meningeal artery, lesser petrosal nerve, emissary veins pass .The shape of the foramen ovale is usually oval compared to other foramen of the skull.

Background and Aim The foramen ovale is a clinically significant foramen present in the skull base. The mandibular nerve is an important structure traversing this foramen and the trigeminal ganglion is also located just above the foramen ovale in the Meckel's cave. These two structures are targeted by neurosurgeons and pain physicians in patients with trigeminal neuralgia. Clinical procedures for treating trigeminal neuralgia necessitate very precise knowledge about the foramen ovale. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate the morphology and morphometry of foramen ovale and its variations in dry skulls of India. Materials and Methods This study was conducted in 100 adult dry skulls of either sex. The foramen ovale was assessed for morphology and morphometry bilaterally using digital Vernier calipers. The summary data for all the measurements are presented in this study. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 19. Results The most common shape of the foramen ovale was found to be oval. Oval-shaped foramen ovale was present in 72% (right side) and 68% (left side) of dry skulls that were examined. A mean length of 6.62 ± 1.11 mm (right side) and 6.72 ± 1.08 mm (left side) and width of 3.78 ± 0.89 mm (right side) and 3.89 ± 0.73 mm (left side) were observed. The distance between the foramen ovale and the zygomatic point was 35.65 ± 3.24 mm (right side) and 34.91 ± 2.58 mm (left side). The distance between the zygomatic point and the anterior margin of the external auditory meatus was 21.79 ± 3.25 mm (right side) and 18.62 ± 2.37 mm (left side). Conclusion An in-depth knowledge of the morphology and morphometry which include the different metric and nonmetric parameters and the variations in foramen ovale in dry skulls has been studied, which will be helpful to neurosurgeons and pain physicians to plan their clinical procedures which involve the base of skull.

Background: There is limited literature of objective assessments of foramina of skull base using computed tomography (CT) scan. This study was carried out to analyze the dimensions of foramen ovale (FO), foramen spinosum (FS), and foramen rotundum (FR) using CT scan imaging of the human skull and their associations with sex, age, and laterality of the body. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Radiodiagnosis and Imaging at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), Nepal using a purposive sampling method. We included 96 adult patients (≥18 years) who underwent CT scan of the head for any clinical indications. All those participants below 18 years, inadequate visualization or erosions of skull base foramina, and/or not consenting were excluded. Appropriate statistical calculations were done using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS), version 21. The P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean length, width, and area of FO was 7.79±1.10 mm, 3.68±0.64 mm, and 22.80±6.18 mm2, respectively. The mean length, width, and area of FS was 2.38±0.36 mm, 1.94±0.30 mm, and 3.69±0.95 mm2, respectively. Similarly, the mean height, width, and area of FR was 2.41±0.49 mm, 2.40±0.55 mm, and 4.58±1.49 mm2, respectively. The male participants had statistically significant higher mean dimensions of FO and FS (P<0.05) than the female participants. There were statistically insignificant correlations of dimensions of these foramina with age and between the left and right side of each foraminal dimensions (P>0.05). Conclusions: The sex-based difference in dimensions of FO and FS should be clinically considered in evaluating the pathology of these foramina. However, further studies using objective assessment of foraminal dimensions are required to draw obvious inferences.

Objective: The present study aim is to evaluate morphology and morphometric measurements of foramen Ovale present in the Greater wing of Sphenoid bone of the Middle Cranial fossa of the Skull base, using Digital sliding Vernier caliper. The anatomical knowledge of Foramen Ovale and it’s variations are of great help to neurosurgeons, oncologists and radiologists while performing any diagnostic and surgical interventions into and nearby foramen to deal with unavoidable complications as Tic douloureux. Methods: This study was done in 35 dried Human skulls taken from the Department of Anatomy, GBCM, Dehradun, India. The length and the width of the Foramen Ovale were measured. The different shapes of the foramen were also seen. All data collected was subjected to Statistical analysis using Student’s T-test. Results: In the present study, Incidence of Oval shape foramen Ovale was maximum, followed by Elongated shape. There were no statistical differences between the mean length and mean width on the two sides of Foramen Ovale. Conclusion: The vast knowledge of different shapes and sizes of foramen Ovale to Neurosurgeons and Oncologists helps to operate with least invasive procedures to avoid clinical manifestations.
