Morphometric abnormalities in spleen and kidney of the progeny of mice fed American cranberry extract (Vaccinium macrocarpon) during pregnancy and lactation

Abstract: Cranberries and cranberry-derived diet supplements are often recommended for the treatment of urinary tract infections, also during pregnancy. These products contain strongly anti-angiogenic chemical compounds which could not be indifferent to the developing fetus. In the present work we evaluated the effect of feeding pregnant and lactating mice American cranberry extract (daily dose 0.88 mg) on the morphology and some parameters of spleen and kidney function of their adult progeny. Six weeks after delivery t… Show more

“…An important concern about cranberry extracts is regarding their safety. Many studies have found no toxicity after treatment with cranberry extracts for 6–10 weeks in experimental animals [ 5 , 6 , 38 ] or in humans [ 39 , 40 ], but a recent study found small differences in the spleen and kidney function of the progeny of mice treated with cranberry extract during pregnancy [ 41 ]. Thus, more specific studies are needed to assure the safety of cranberry extracts.…”

“…oxycoccos is a good source of vitamins. The content of vitamin C is very similar within cranberry cultivars, and 'Early black' has the lowest content, comparable to that of wild cranberries [181,184]. The vitamin content of B1 and B2 in wild and cultivated cranberries is similar, and the highest vitamin E content is found in wild cranberry and in 'Ben Lear' and 'Pilgrim'.…”

“…Cranberry contains high quantities of phenolic compounds, and extracts can prevent atherosclerosis, restore blood vessel elasticity, eliminate eye fatigue and improve eyesight; moreover, there is considerable evidence that they can prevent and treat cancer and strengthen the function of the heart. V. oxycoccos, like V. vitis-idaea, also is effective in the treatment of urinary tract infections [180][181][182][183].…”

“…In an experimental study by Bałan et al [ 19 ], pregnant and lactating mice were fed with American cranberry extract of a daily dose of 0.88 mg. The authors observed some differences in the progeny’s spleens, more CD19+ and CD8+ lymphocytes in the cytometry analysis of spleen cells, higher serum concentration of VEGF and bFGF, as well as an increase in the diameter of kidneys glomeruli in the offspring from the cranberry group compared to the control group.…”

However, no differences were seen in the response to immunization by red blood cells of sheep, and no abnormalities in creatinine and urea serum level were also observed in progeny of mice fed with cranberries [ 19 ].…”
