Morphology, thermal behavior, and mechanical properties of PA6/UHMWPE blends with HDPE-g-MAH as a compatibilizing agent

Abstract: A functionalized high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with maleic anhydride (MAH) was prepared using a reactive extruding method. This copolymer was used as a compatibilizer of blends of polyamide 6 (PA6) and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Morphologies were examined by a scanning electron microscope. It was found that the dimension of UHMWPE and HDPE domains in the PA6 matrix decreased dramatically, compared with that of the uncompatibilized blending system. The size of the UHMWPE domains was re… Show more

“…The compatibilizer: HDPE-g-MAH was prepared in our laboratory by reactive grafting technology in an SHJ-30 reactive mode co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D = 44 and D = 30 mm; the processing conditions were the following as reported elsewhere [8]. The ternary PA6/UHM-WPE/HDPEg-MAH blend was prepared by re-active blending of the components.…”

“…The extrudate were quenched in a water bath, pelletized and dried at 80 • C for 16 h, then fed into an extruder to inject into a mould to obtain the PA6/UHMWPE6 blend bar with a diameter of 10 mm. The mechanical and thermal properties were reported elsewhere [8]. The comparison materials were: commercial UHMWPE (Mw = 2.5 × 10 6 ) in the form of 25 mm diameter rod; PA6 in the form of 10 mm diameter rod.…”

“…Therefore, its engineering applications are limited (Kurtz,et al (4)). The blend of PA66 and UHMWPE (PA/UHMWPE) can hopefully overcome the shortcomings of both polymers while retaining their good mechanical properties, so that it would offer a strong potential to apply in the field of the self-lubricating sliding parts (Liu,et al ((5)-(7); Yao, et al (8), (9)). …”
