Morphology study of the otoliths of the parrotfish,Chlorurus sordidus(Forsskål, 1775) andHipposcarus harid(Forsskål, 1775) from the Red Sea coast of Egypt (Family: Scaridae)

Abstract: In the present study a comparison of the otolith morphology of two species of parrotfish, family Scaridae, collected from the Red Sea coast of Egypt, is conducted to identify the most appropriate taxonomic characters that separate these species. Ontogenetic changes in the otoliths of the two scarid fishes become evident. In the otoliths of Chlorurus sordidus, the following characters are comparable in small-sized adult fishes: otolith width, otolith depth, mesial surface shape, lateral surface shape, shape of … Show more

“…Such result is in agreement with those obtained for triplefin species by Jawad (2007), Jawad et al (2017) on Saurida tumbil and on parrotfishes. In V. poweriae, the posterior margin is rounded, but the dorsal and ventral have variable shapes including rounded and straight.…”

“…As with the other two species, the surface of the three margins is with lobes and crenulations of different sizes. Such result is in agreement with those obtained for triplefin species by Jawad (2007), Jawad et al (2017) on Saurida tumbil and on parrotfishes.…”

“…The study of relationship between otolith size and fish size varied according to the distribution region, the stock and sexes (Sparre et al, 1989;Campana and Casselman, 1993;Reichenbacher et al, 2009;Aneesh et al, 2017), also the change of ontogenetic in the life span or history (Hare and Cowen, 1995). The present work was confirmed with other studies that investigated the correlation between fish length and otolith size (Mahé et al, 2014;Mahé et al, 2016;Mehanna et al, 2016;Jawad, et al, 2017;Mapp 2017;Mahé et al, 2018;Osman et al, 2018).…”

“…Recently, Jawad et al . () described the morphology of two scarid species, Chlorurus sordidus (Forsskål 1775) and Hipposcarus harid (Forsskål 1775), from the Egypian coast of the Red Sea. The present paper provides a morphological analysis of parrotfish otoliths from the Solomon Islands.…”
