Morphology of the trunk of Corynosoma hamanni (acanthocephala: Polymorphidae)

Abstract: Morphological study of Corynosoma hamanni (Linstow, 1892) was continued with the intention of presenting a morphological description of a single, well defined species.Sexual dimorphism is exhibited in body size, males being larger, and in body spination. Trunk spines are arranged in a pattern similar to that of Corynosoma semerme and do not extend onto the bursa as reported in the original description of C . humunni. Two testes, located side by side, are followed by six cement glands arranged in two groups of … Show more

“…The circumbursal papillae observed on the bursa of A. leucocarboi (fig. 2C) appear to resemble closely the description given for the circumbursal papillae of Corynosoma hamanni by Holloway & Nickol (1970), both species being in the family Polymorphidae. These authors estimated that there were 35 papillae, each about 7.5 μm high and about the same in diameter, while our estimate was about 40, 10 μm in diameter.…”

“…Those studied (27 from birds, 32 from fishes, and 2 from amphipods) had 18-22 rows of hooks with 11-16 hooks per row (the last 2-3 being large spines). The extent of spination on the trunk in males and females was identical to previous descriptions of C. hamanni (Edmonds, 1957 ;Jones and Williams, 1969 ;Holloway and Nickol, 1970 ;Zdzitowiecki, 1978b ; and others). They were also generally similar in the form of the lemnisci and the relative length of the proboscis receptacle.…”

“…According to these authorities, the size of the egg was one of few morphological characters that could be consistently used to separate these species (also see Holloway and Nickol, 1970).…”

“…In H. niekerki males are generally larger than females (Table II). This unusual dimorphism has also been noted in species of the polymorphid genus Corynosoma Ltihe, 1904(Van Cleave, 1953Holloway & Nickol, 1970).…”
