“…Tropical estuarine ecosystems in Brazil (Porto andFonteles-Filho 1986, Thüllen andBerger 2000) and worldwide (Blaber 2002, Capo et al 2006, Lam-Hoai et al 2006) seasonal changes in salinity are mainly influenced by rainfall distribution between the seasons. In general, decreases in pluviometric precipitation during the dry season caused gradual decreases in river discharges and land run-off.…”

“…Research on the Fly River Estuary, Papua New Guinea (Wolanski et al, 1995) and the Mekong River Estuary, Vietnam (Wolanski et al, 1996) has revealed similar effects in tropical estuaries, although the data in each case do not give the whole picture in relation to overall seasonal patterns. A more recent study on the Konkoure Estuary in Equatorial Guinea (Capo et al, 2006) showed similar ETM response features and also noted the effects of upstream dam construction on flow regime and ETM characteristics. Migration of sediment in response to freshwater flow is of particular interest in the case of the Mekong River owing to the effect on the estuary's sediment regime of building a dam up-river, with consequences for wildlife and navigation.…”

“…Previous studies clearly demonstrate the influence and control of river flow (Q f ) on the SF response threshold inside estuaries (D) (Uncles & Stephens, 1993;Kurup et al, 1998;Capo et al, 2006). This re- lationship can be approximated by a potential regression.…”

“…This interface indicates the limit between the two water masses and is defined by an isohaline. In the literature, the SF is defined by a variety of isohaline values, such as 0.5 UPS (Capo et al, 2006), 1 UPS (Uncles & Stephens, 1993), 5 UPS (Lerczak et al, 2009) …”
