1. Careful search has failed to disclose the presence of flame cells in the excretory system of the adult liver fluke.2. Fat globules are produced in the walls of the excretory system, and are freed into the lumen, and thus to the exterior.3. These globules do not contain appreciable quantities of cholesterol, cholesterides or lipins, but may contain some unsaturated fatty material.4. The aqueous medium in which the globules float is either neutral or slightly alkaline.5. The distribution of reduced ascorbic acid has been investigated by the silver nitrate technique. This indicates that the main concentration occurs in the smaller vessels of the excretory system, and in the submuscular tissues of the body wall.

Feeding in Peranema trichophorum (Ehrenberg 1838) Stein 1878 wasJirst observed over a centu?y ago, yet there is still contention over how the feeding apparatus is used in feeding. Using video microscopy and scanning microscopy, this study documents two types of feeding. Peranema may engulf prey cells whole. Immotile cells are prejimed, but moving cells occasionally are engulfed. Details of the ear4 stages of engulfment are presented using scanning electron microscopy. A second method of feeding begans with the attachment of Peranema to a prey cell. The rods of the feeding apparatus then are repeatedly scraped over the sulface of the prey until a tear occurs in the cell. The feeding apparatus is inserted into the opening and the internal cell contents are sucked out. The anterior jlagellum is inserted into the prq to help remove the cells contents.

Abstract— Perimycin, ouabain and elevation of extracellular K+ concentrations cause an increase in the fluence rate thresholds (white light) for the step‐up photophobic response in Peranema trichophorum. Elevation of extracellular Na+ concentration decreases the thresholds for this response in comparison to the control level. The fluence rate threshold of perimycin‐treated cells increases before the side effect of an antibiotic action appears. Removal of K+ ions from the medium of K+‐treated cells to a concentration of 1 mM depresses the threshold for the step‐up response to the control level. By addition of K+ or Na + ions to perimycin‐ or ouabain‐treated cells the threshold returns to the control value. It is suggested that the flagellar and cell membrane are responsible for changes of P. trichophorum photosensitivity.
