Morphology and dynamic mechanical properties of styrene–butadiene rubber/silica/organoclay nanocomposites manufactured by a latex method

Abstract: In this study, the styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR)/N, N‐dimethyldodecylamine‐montmorillonite nanocomposite was prepared with a latex method by applying DDA to Na+‐MMT as a modifier. The dispersion of silica and the dynamic viscoelastic properties of the SBR/silica (60 phr) compound were studied by replacing 7 phr of the silica with organoclay. By the analysis of transmission electron microscopy images and the Payne effect, the dispersion of silica in the SBR/silica (53 phr)/DDA‐MMT (7 phr) compound was further … Show more

“…As summarized in Fig. 8, in comparison with the rubber composites with comparable tensile strength [10,[32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40], SBR/BM/TA composites exhibit a lower tensile modulus but a higher elongation at break, thus appearing more flexible without sacrificing the tensile strength. Such distinctive flexibility of SBR/BM/TA composites may be associated with interlayer sliding and separation loads, which has been applied to nano-flake filled composites [41].…”

“…The benefits of copolymerized styrene butadiene latex are many, including addition of organoclay as filler to form styrene butadiene hybrid polymer or nanocomposite. This modification offered this synthetic latex essential to an ever-widening group of markets and also to improve final performance of the products [3]. Depending on the interphase force between the polymer and organoclay, effect on different morphology are thermodynamically understood such as intercalated structure, flocculated structure and exfoliated structure [4,5].…”
