Morphology and development of the Portuguese man of war, Physalia physalis

Abstract: The Portuguese man of war, Physalia physalis, is one of the most conspicuous, but poorly understood members of the pleuston, a community of organisms that occupy a habitat at the sea-air interface. Physalia physalis is a siphonophore that uses a gas-filled float as a sail to catch the wind. The development, morphology, and colony organization of P. physalis is very different from all other siphonophores. Here, we look at live and fixed larval and juvenile specimens, and use optical projection tomography to bui… Show more

“…S12C) [17,[30][31][32]. In P. physalis, both the gastrozooid and the tentacular palpon are considered to be subfunctionalized from an ancestral gastrozooid type [31]. Finally, in Agalma elegans, there are thought to be at least two different palpon types: gastric palpons that arise at the base of the peduncle of the gastrozooid, and a palpon called the B-palpon (Fig.…”

“…Figure 10 presents an example of the potentialities of 4D printing. However, unlike what the Portuguese man-of-war (Physalia physalis) is able to do in nature (Munro et al, 2019), one of the difficulties consists in assembling the individual voxels to form an efficient and robust tool/ machine.…”

“…Scientific name: Physalia physalis utriculus Appearance: A lovely blue hue. Also called "blue bottles," they have a bluish-white floating hood from which tentacles extend to reach a length of 10-20 m [27]. The Portuguese man-of-war is also called the "electric jellyfish" because its tentacles contain many nematocysts that induce a strong sensation akin to an electric shock (Fig.…”
