Morphology and crystal growth of pure calaverite

Abstract: Some preliminary results of artificial growth of the incommensurately modulated mineral calaverite are presented. Using different growth techniques such as Bridgman and Kyropoulos the authors obtained relatively large single crystals of AuTe2 (up to 50 mm in length) with facets. The crystals were characterized by use of SEM imaging and microprobe, Laue backscattering and optical goniometry. Using a four-dimensional description for the morphology, indexing of both main and satellite faces was possible.

“…The indexing {hklm} is to a large extent clear and unambiguous and consistent with the results of x-ray and neutron analy- discovered by Amelinckx and co-workers, that da-92 forms {hk/m} were determined have been grown in the and growth Phenomena occurring on faces {hklm} and related faces. Also the new results on surface observations occurring on calaverite will be reported [15]. It is clear from these studies that structure and growth processes Occurring on these faces are not at all well understood.…”

“…Contrary to the case of [(CH3)nN]2ZnC14, numerous as well as large satellite faces can be found on as-grown crystals of AuTe 2, both for mineral crystals found in nature and for synthetically prepared crystals (Balzuweit, Meekes & Bennema, 1991). The incommensurate structure of AuTe 2 can be characterized with a monoclinic lattice A, 13 = 90.038 °, lall = 7.1947, la21 = 4.4146 and[a31 = 5.0703 ,~ (Schutte &de Boer, 1988).…”
