Morphological transformation of soot: investigation of microphysical processes during the condensation of sulfuric acid and limonene ozonolysis product vapors

Abstract: Abstract. The morphological transformation of soot particles via condensation of low-volatility materials constitutes a dominant atmospheric process with serious implications for the optical and hygroscopic properties, as well as atmospheric lifetime of the soot. We consider the morphological transformation of soot aggregates under the influence of condensation of vapors of sulfuric acid, and/or limonene ozonolysis products. This influence was systematically investigated using a Differential Mobility Analyzer … Show more

“…Photochemical reactions play an important role in the aging process of black carbon, leading to the modification of BC morphology and optical properties as evidenced by laboratory studies (Saathoff et al, 515 2003;Schnaiter et al, 2005;Martinsson et al, 2015;Pei et al, 2018) and quasi-atmospheric chamber studies (Peng et al, 2017;Peng et al, 2016). Filed studies at various locations have also showed that photochemical processing can promote the light absorption enhancement of BC, including in Beijing (Liu et al, 2019b), Yangtze River Delta (Xu et al, 2018c), Xi'an (Wang et al, 2017c), Los Angels (Krasowsky et al, 2016) and…”

“…Our rationale for using a fixed refractive index is to isolate how the changes in the aerosol size and number affect extinction. The particle extinction is also a function of potentially evolving particle morphology and refractive index in the plume during aging (Pei et al, 2018), but we do not attempt to address these changes here with justification given in the next paragraph.…”

“…According to the biomass smoke measurement results, the size of dry particles was 0.10-0.16 µm at count median diameter (0.25-0.30 µm at volume median diameter) (Reid et al, 2005a). Laboratory and in situ measurements for aged biomass smoke yielded estimates of ω ≥ 0.75 and g ∼ 0.6 at λ = 532 nm (Reid et al, 2005b;Pokhrel et al, 2016). For lidar measurements, typical values of L ∼ 70 sr and δ L ∼ 7 % at λ = 532 nm have been reported (Groß et al, 2015a, b).…”
