Morphological Study of the Liver in the Teleost Oreochromis niloticus

Abstract: Liver samples of Oreochromis niloticus cultivated in floating net cages were fixed for histological and ultrastructural studies with the objective of describing the hepatic parenchymal structure and the intrahepatic exocrine pancreatic tissue. Anatomically, the liver showed only two hepatic lobes. Histological analysis demonstrated that the hepatocytes were spread out as anastomotic cords, arranged in two cellular layers and surrounded by sinusoids. The intrahepatic exocrine pancreatic tissue exhibited an acin… Show more

“…These findings are similar to other teleosts (Akiyoshi, Inoue, 2004;Bombonato et al, 2007). The bile ducts observed in the three species had a simple cubic epithelium, which becomes columnar in large ducts similar to other teleosts (Vicentini et al, 2005;Faccioli et al, 2014). Only G. brasiliensis has an intrahepatic exocrine pancreas that was arranged in clusters of columnar cells, which were organized in acini.…”

“…In the present study, three species had absence of division into hepatic lobules and the lack of portal triads as also recorded in many teleosts (Vicentini et al, 2005;Nejedli, Gajger, 2013;Pronina et al, 2014;Faccioli et al, 2014). The network of blood capillaries showed vessels that were anastomosed and drained by centre-lobular veins.…”

“…Animal Sciences Maringá, v. 39, n. 4, p. 343-349, Oct.-Dec., 2017 In the presence of hepatopancreatic tissue in pancreatic acinar cells containing secretory granules numerous eosinophils was also observed. The results of this study fit to the description of liver morphology of teleost and to Nile tilapia (Vicentini et al, 2005). The cytoplasm vacuolization indicates the probable location of lipid and glycogen reserves in hepatocytes.…”

“…The average dissolved oxygen in experimental tanks was equal to 6.9 ± 1.5 mg L At the end of the experiment, the fish were anesthetized (eugenol 75 mg l -¹) (Moreira, Teixeira, Carreiro & Moreira, 2010), weighed and measured (height, width, length and head) individually for the assessment of body parameters, chemical composition of the carcass and liver histology. In each experimental unit three animals were selected and randomly slaughtered to assessment of body yield parameters and histological evaluation (Vicentini et al, 2005) For the study of the morphology and integrity of the hepatic tissue, the procedures described by Graciano, Natali, Vidal, Michelato, Righetti and Furuya (2010) The final results of the evaluated parameters were submitted to variance analysis with significance level of 5% and in the case of statistical difference were applied regression analysis, using the SAEG program. vit.…”

“…In the liver parenchyma of H. platyrhynchos, the hepatocytes are arranged in cords and it was no division in lobules and portal triads was observed, as evidenced in other teleosts (Kendall & Hawkins;Hampton et al, 1985;Gonzalez et al, 1993;Vicentini et al, 2005;Bombonato et al;Bertolucci et al). The hepatocytes of H. platyrhynchos are polygonal and present basal nucleus and apical cytoplasm with few glycogen granules but large amount of lipids, similar to observed in Sparus aurata (El-Bakary & El-Gammal, 2010).…”
