Morphological Indices as Urban Planning Tools in Northeastern Brazil

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to analyze urban form through the mapping of morphological indices, namely impervious surface fraction, building density, verticality, height/width ratio, roughness length, and porosity, to support urban planning in the city of João Pessoa, PB, in northeastern Brazil. The application of this study identifies and calculates such significant indices for the city’s urban space from a Geographic Information System (GIS) model. The spatial indices play notable roles in climate at diff… Show more

“…O estudo da morfologia é uma discussão recente para cidades brasileiras, podendo ser utilizado como ferramenta de planejamento, ao fornecer informações para diretrizes urbanas e adaptar o meio urbano à modificação das condições climáticas. A verticalização impacta significativamente a disponibilidade de iluminação natural, as áreas sombreadas e a visibilidade do céu, gerando aumento da absorção da radiação solar, bem como aumento da velocidade dos ventos (Silva et al, 2018).…”

“…It is well known that the urban form and its variation strongly influence the thermal patterns of the city [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]: for this reason, the technical staff of the Planning Office of the Municipality of Bologna started from the “Territory Classification” map which characterizes and identifies urban and building textures and morphology similar to each other within the municipal area [ 20 ]. The city’s climate analysis is computed, taking into account the morphological indices together with vegetation cover and land surface temperature giving support to classify the entire urban environment in climatic classes.…”

“…These conditions are determined by the physical and morphological features of each urban areas, such as the distribution and density of the buildings, the materials characterizing their surfaces, the presence of vegetation, etc. Hence, the analysis and understanding of this environmental and geometrical attributes is an important step to identify responsive solutions at the urban and building scale during the design process (Silva et al, 2018). In this scenario, urban design and urban planning play a key role.…”
