Morphological Features of the Stomach of Malayan Pangolin, Manis javanica

Abstract: The morphology of the stomach of Malayan pangolin, Manis javanica was studied at macroscopic, light microscopic, and scanning electron microscopic levels. The stomach of M. javanica was C-shaped with short lesser curvature. At the oesophageal junction, the inner smooth muscle was thickened in the greater curvature side. The entire stomach was lined by a thick cornified stratified squamous epithelium, except at the duct orifices of glands and in the pyloric gland region. The wall of the fundus was thin and devo… Show more

“…To our knowledge, a CGG has been reported in twelve other mammalian species: the wombat [6], koala [7], dusky and northern shrew opossums [8], pangolins [9], [10], grasshopper mouse [11], dugong [12], and all species of manatees [13]. Animals possessing a CGG are herbivores with the exception of the grasshopper mouse and pangolin, which are insectivores.…”

“…The location and macroscopic structure of the CGG have significant interspecies differences [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13]. In the koala, wombat, dusky and northern shrew opossums, the CGG is present along the lesser curvature, directly behind the esophageal entrance.…”

“…Beberapa keunikan trenggiling adalah tubuh yang ditutupi sisik-sisik keras seperti reptil, tidak memiliki gigi (toothless) seperti unggas, lidah dapat menjulur panjang dan menggulung tubuh jika terancam (Breen, 2012), serta memiliki pyloric teeth di daerah pilorus lambung (Nisa' et al, 2010). Selain itu kemampuan penciuman trenggiling lebih baik dibandingkan penglihatannya (Robinson, 2005).…”
