Romania has a wide variety of local landraces and heirloom genotypes. Our study aims to assess the performance of twenty halotolerant tomato landraces, collected from areas with medium and high levels of soil salinity, in terms ofthe accumulation of antioxidant compounds in fruits and to cluster them according to their nutraceutical components. The tomatoes used in the study were harvested once they had attained full ripeness and then analyzed for lycopene (Lyc), ascorbic acid content (AsA), total phenolic content (TPC), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The results revealed major differences between genotypes in terms of nutraceutical values. According to principal component analysis, the tomato landraces were grouped into five clusters, characterized by different proportions of compounds with antioxidant activity. The high/moderate nutritional values of Lyc, TAC, TPC, and AsA were obtained from varieties taken from local lands with high soil salinity, over 6.5 dS m−1. These findings support the idea that metabolites and secondary antioxidants are involved in the process of stress adaptation, thereby increasing salinity tolerance in tomatoes. Our results show that there are tomato landraces with a tolerance of adaptation to conditions of high soil salinity and provide information on their ability to synthesize molecules with antioxidant functions that protect plants against oxidative damage.

Most of the tomato varieties in Bangladesh are of inbred type and produced low yield indicating need to develop high yielding variety through the hybridization. Heterosis breeding is used to improve yield and quality of tomato because traditional methods cannot be used to achieve this goal. A half diallel design was employed to develop F1s from seven parents of winter tomato. 21 F1s along with their parents were evaluated for yield and quality traits. Heterosis analysis revealed that heterotic vigor was present for growth and yield characters among hybrids. Heterosis for better parent was negative for days to flowering, days to harvest, harvest duration, number of locules, and number of seeds per fruit but positive for fruit set, number of fruits per plant, yield per plant, pericarp thickness and TSS. None of the hybrid was heterotic for all characters simultaneously. The hybrids G5, G13, G16, G17, G18, and G20 had 25.73, 19.92, 39.20, 36.49, 53.77, and 50.31% higher heterosis compared to the better parent, respectively, for fruit yield per plant as well as for many other yield contributing traits. High heterosis for yield appears to be the consequence of heterosis of yield attributing traits; therefore, these hybrids offer scope of developing improved commercial lines through heterosis breeding.

Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum (CaLso) is associated with diseases in tomato crops and transmitted by the tomato psyllid Bactericera cockerelli. A polymeric water-dispersible nanobactericide (PNB) was evaluated against CaLso as a different alternative. PNB is a well-defined polycationic diblock copolymer designed to permeate into the vascular system of plants. Its assessment under greenhouse conditions was carried out with tomato plants previously infected with CaLso. Using a concentration as low as 1.0 mg L−1, a small but significant reduction in the bacterial load was observed by real-time qPCR. Thus, to achieve an ecologically friendly dosage and set an optimum treatment protocol, we performed experiments to determine the effective concentration of PNB to reduce ~65% of the initial bacterial load. In a first bioassay, a 40- or 70-fold increase was used to reach that objective. At this concentration level, other bioassays were explored to determine the effect as a function of time. Surprisingly, a real reduction in the symptoms was observed after three weeks, and there was a significant decrease in the bacterial load level (~98%) compared to the untreated control plants. During this period, flowering and formation of tomato fruits were observed in plants treated with PNB.
