Morphological Characterization of the In Vitro Mycorrhizae Formed between Four Terfezia Species (Pezizaceae) with Cistus salviifolius and Cistus ladanifer—Towards Desert Truffles Production in Acid Soils

Abstract: Terfezia species are obligate symbiotic partners of several xerophytic host plants, mainly belonging to the Cistaceae. Yet, their mycorrhizal associations with members of the genus Cistus remain poorly characterized and their potential application in desert truffle cultivation remains unexplored. This work provides the first anatomic descriptions of the mycorrhizae formed in vitro by four Terfezia species (i.e., T. arenaria; T. extremadurensis; T. fanfani, T. pini) with C. ladanifer and C. salviifolius, two of… Show more

“…However, much is still unknown about their edibility, properties and associated economic value. Similarly to most ECMF, Terfezia breeding programmes are based on the plantation of inoculated plants (Arenas et al, 2018;Louro et al, 2021;Morte et al, 2009Morte et al, , 2020. Terfezia mycorrhization (in vitro and ex vitro) and maintenance have been studied (Gutiérrez et al, 2003;Jamali & Banihashemi, 2013;Navarro-R odenas et al, 2012;Turgeman et al, 2016;Zaretsky et al, 2006;Zitouni-Haouar et al, 2014), and one method patented (Andrino et al, 2013).…”

“…Terfezia truffle production is seasonal and takes place in spring, in arid and semiarid regions (Morte et al, 2012). Terfezia claveryi and Terfezia boudieri have been successfully cultivated (Morte et al, 2017, 2020), and Terfezia arenaria cultivation in acid soils is currently under development (Louro, 2020; Louro et al, 2021). In addition, 16 other Terfezia species were found in the Iberian Peninsula (Table S2), opening new possibilities for Terfezia cultivation and exploitation.…”

“…Adhering to these these stipulations, we have developed a case study in Portugal, where until 2018 Terfezia richness was greatly overlooked, with only three species documented. Since then, five more Terfezia species have been recorded T. cistophila, T. extremadurensis, T. lusitanica, T. pini and T. solaris-libera (Bordallo et al 2018;Louro 2020;Louro et al 2020Louro et al , 2021 and the soil main features and putative host plant were registered. In the present work we reassess the diversity of this genus and characterize Terfezia ecology within the framework of ecological preferences, while also probing the intraspecific variability of the Terfezia taxa in analysis.…”
