Key words: Donkey, Hassawi, blood, haematology, serumThe Hassawi donkey breed represents one of the most common native donkey breeds in the Middle East taking its name from the Al-Hasa region in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Due to the lack of information about the main haematological and serum biochemical parameters of Hassawi donkey breed, this study aimed at the determination of reference base-line values regarding haematological and biochemical parameters. Four physiological, sixteen haematological and twenty biochemical parameters were determined. In comparison to other donkey breeds, Hassawi donkey showed higher percentage of eosinophils 17.62 ± 1.92%, higher concentrations of creatine kinase (CK) 185.6 ± 6.55 IU/L, phosphorus (PHOS) 4.40 ± 0.21 mmol/l, magnesium (MG) 2.48 ± 0.08 mmol/l, calcium (Ca) 12.4 ± 0.09 mmol/l, Sodium (Na) 133.1 ± 0.39 mmol/l and potassium (K) 4.77 ± 0.1mmol/l, but lower concentration of gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) 31 ± 2.78 IU/l. The higher glucose (GLU) 80.82 ± 4.67 mg/dl values in the present study may be due to the date rich feeding of Hassawi donkey.

Aim:Little is known about the serum levels of trace elements in donkeys and horses in Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to investigate the levels of some trace elements in these two species in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia and to compare the obtained results with the reference values.Materials and Methods:Seventeen Arabian horses and twenty eight Hassawi donkeys were randomly selected for this study. All of the studied healthy animals were kept under a uniform feeding protocol without any minerals supplementations. Atomic absorption spectrometer is used to estimate the serum concentrations of selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) in the analyzed samples.Results:Significant differences between horses and donkeys were observed in three of the studied elements (Se, Mn, and Cr). Statistically significant differences were found in serum Se and Cr between male and female horses. The male donkey showed higher Mn, Cu, and Zn levels than female animals.Conclusion:The obtained results of trace element levels in serum of Hassawi donkeys and Arabian horses in Saudi Arabia are considered as the first values to be published for these breeds. When compared to other animals, the measured amounts of Se, Mn, Cr, Cu, Fe, and Zn in the serum of horses and donkey are often differed, possibly because of the varying living or feeding conditions. Moreover, there were some differences in some of the trace elements concentrations related to animal’s gender and species (horses and donkeys), which will be considered in the interpretation of the laboratory data.

Donkeys support rural livelihoods and low-income farmer's family by providing economy at minimal maintenance cost. In India, donkeys constitute about 28% of total equine population but these are non-descript local donkeys without any breed characterization. This study describes phenotypic diversity among different donkey populations available in various agro-climatic regions in India including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, J&K, Haryana, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh for their phenotypic clustering as a distinct breed(s) by considering each population as a separate cluster.Biometric indices of seven local donkey populations were recorded and compared to French Poitou donkey breed which revealed that average body length of donkeys from Spiti, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Baramati, Bihar, Haryana and Leh areas was 97. 09, 101.18, 97.60, 103.68, 96.31, 109 & 95.76 cm, respectively, while Poitou donkeys had significantly higher length(138.79 cm) than indigenous donkey populations. Further height at wither revealed that except leh donkey population, the rest of the donkeys prevalent throughout different agro-climatic regions met a "small standard' pattern. Donkey populations from Leh were fitted in 'Miniature' donkey pattern. All local donkeys were well adapted to their agroclimatic environment and ecology as they were totally dependent upon the grass cover and roughages available within their reach for meeting their nutritional requirement. Coat colour varied across different regions. Black and brown colours were prevalent in donkeys from cold desert regions including Leh and Spiti region. Face length of donkeys from Spiti, Gujarat and Baramati were at par with each other while donkeys from Leh had smallest face length. Cluster analysis based on biometric indices revealed that exotic Poitou donkeys is an out-group as it formed a distinct cluster while Indigenous donkeys belonging to various agro-climatic zones were grouped in three clusters namely, C1-miniature or near miniature donkeys (Leh, Spiti and Bihar regions), C2-small standard ones including donkeys from Rajasthan and Gujarat while cluster C3 having donkeys from Baramati and Haryana region. Poitou cluster was phenotypically different from Cluster 1 as Eucledean cluster distance was maximum with donkeys of this cluster, followed by cluster 2 and cluster 3. This information will be useful for breed classification of these local non-descript donkeys.
