Morphological Characteristics of Dimples of Ductile Fracture of VT23M Titanium Alloy and Identification of Dimples on Fractograms of Different Scale

Abstract: The authors developed a method for the automated detection and calculation of quantitative parameters of dimples of ductile fracture on the digital images of fracture surfaces obtained at different scales. The processing algorithm of fractographic images was proposed, which allowed high quality recognition of the shape and size of dimples to be achieved, taking into account the morphological features of their digital images. The developed method for identifying dimples of various physical and morphological cha… Show more

“…Figures 6(C)-(F) depicts the fractographs of tensile tested samples of Mg, MgZn, MgCe, and MgZnCe. The appearance of dimples in all the systems confirms ductile fracture behavior [46]. Corrosion potential (E corr ) and corrosion current density (I corr ) values of each material system were calculated using the Tafel extrapolation method, as tabulated in table 4.…”

“…Figures 13(A 1 )-(D 1 ) and (A 2 ) (above the red line) show clear stepped cleavage planes on the fracture surface of all remelted zones, revealing the typical characteristic of brittle fracture [44][45][46]. In these remelted zones, the microstructures are dominated by dendrites with refined size.…”

“…The physical process of ductile fracture of specimens UT, HT, and CT is mostly recognized to be based on a sequence relating to void nucleation, void growth, and void coalescence importunately to micro crack formation. The process of ductile fracture comprising void nucleation and growth are principally influenced by the type of dislocation and dislocation interactions which are mainly administrated by the state of strain hardening of the dissimilar weld during the weld heating and cooling of HAZ [ 30 ]. For better understanding of this phenomena, the entire range of dimples has to be analyzed for size and density distribution.…”
