Morphological Characteristics of Different Ficus Species Found in Samaru-Zaria, Nigeria

Abstract: The genus Ficus is an important genetic resource due to its high economic and nutritional values. It is also an important part of biodiversity in the rainforest ecosystem. The leaf shape is variable, even among the leaves on the same tree and such characters as acuminate tips and cordate bases are seldom constant. The research was aimed to determined the morphological characteristics of leaves from eight different Ficus species found in Zaria in wet and dry season. Macromorphological characters such as leaf ty… Show more

“…A significant increase in human settlement particularly in the urban areas had put many people vulnerable to firerelated disasters. According to Adamu et al (2020), many disasters are occasioned by the rapid population growth rate, urbanization, and socio-political issues occasioned by ethnic plurality, which all, in turn, create fierce competition for national resources, that result in deteriorating livelihoods, social marginalization, crime, and general insecurity. Another opinion by Yunus (2021), that population growth and urbanization have led to over-stretching of the land and existing infrastructures as a result of an increase in human activities (social, economic, and political), demand for land, services, and basic amenities, and market places are not exceptional.…”

“…Ogbonna et al, 2018 andAdamu et al, 2021).Liu et al, (2019) attributed differenc es in leaf morphology to adaptive features and the ability to withstand environmental factors such as serrated leaf margins which help to reduc e transpiration rate.Quantitative measurements showed significant variations in the amount of dust accumulated and leaf sizes (Table2). At both sites, N. latifolia and A. senegalensis had the largest leaf area while B. ferruginea had the smallest leaf area.…”
