Morphological characteristics of Candida albicans, Candida krusei, Candida guilliermondii, and Candida glabrata biofilms, and response to farnesol

Abstract: Background and Aim: Different Candida species isolated in humans and animals have different types of parasite activity. The most pathogenic species is Candida albicans followed by Candida tropicalis. However, the effects of the morphology of Candida krusei, Candida guilliermondii, and Candida glabrata biofilms on the pathogenicity of these species have not been fully characterized. To the best of our knowledge, there is no literature on the effect of farnesol on rare Candida species. This study aimed to check … Show more

“…The concentration of YLF was 0.5, according to McFarland, which corresponded to 1.5 × 10 8 cells/mL. The optical density (OD) of the biofilm was measured by the degree of binding of crystal violet (Himedia, Mumbai, India) at a wavelength of 580 nm (OD580) in an Immunochem-2100 microplate photometric analyzer (HTI, North Attleboro, MA, USA) [ 3 ].…”

“…In nature, fungi of the genus Candida are widespread. They live on household items and food, primarily on sugar-rich vegetables and fruits, in dairy products as well as in the internal cavities of mammals including humans [ 3 , 4 , 5 ].…”

“…As a QS molecule, farnesol participates in regulating various physiological processes in Candida , including filamentation, biofilm formation, drug susceptibility, and apoptosis [ 3 , 4 , 16 , 22 ]. This compound is produced by many organisms, mainly fungi and is also found in many essential oils of plants [ 23 ].…”

“…However, the effect of farnesol on its synergy or antagonism with known antifungal drugs has been studied to a lesser extent. This study showed that farnesol certainly affects the degree of YLF resistance, indicating its potential role as an antimicrobial agent [ 3 , 4 , 25 , 26 ]. However, results showed that the resistance profiles of Candida strains are not improved by farnesol in all strains.…”
