Morphological Characteristics and Soil Mechanical Properties of a Gully in the Dry-Hot Valley Region of Southwestern China

Abstract: Gully erosion was one of the serious environmental problems in the Yuanmou Dry-Hot Valley downstream of the Jinsha River [1-5], where soil erosion intensity reached up to 1.64×104 t / (km 2 •a) and gully density was up to 3.0~5.0 km/km 2 , with a maximum of 7.4 km/km 2 [3-5]. At present, there was a great deal of research focusing on one of the parts among gully head, gully wall and gully bed in the region [3-6], while the comparative studies on various parts of gullies are seldom reported. The soil shear stre… Show more

“…Scour holes are a typical feature resulting from soil mass failure at gully heads in the Yuanmou Dry‐Hot Valley and similar to washing holes on the Loess Plateau in terms of the formation process (Chen et al, 2015; Zhang, Xiong, et al, 2016; Zhang et al, 2019). Scour holes also develop at gully heads, in steep cliffs, and in soil columns, often in a linear arrangement, and some scour holes are even arranged in multiple layers.…”
